A Review of the Nokia N97 Mini Design: Why the Body of the N97 Mini Beats the Original N97

Jenniifer Blake
The Nokia N97 Mini is the newest phone release by Nokia with a full QWERTY keyboard and as the name suggests, is the little brother of the bulky N97. Everything that the N97 failed to accomplish, the Nokia N97 Mini gets right, at a fraction of the price.

The Nokia N97 Mini has a smaller display than the N97 and has body dimensions of 113 x 52.5 x 14.2 mm, the Nokia N97 Mini also does not have the d-pad on the keyboard like its larger sibling. The phone has a hefty feel and weighs approximately 138 grams; this could be due to its metal furnishings such as the battery cover.

The Nokia N97 Mini has a sideway slide QWERTY keyboard which is exactly like that seen on the original N97. The plastic battery cover that adorned the original has also been replaced with a metal battery cover; the lens cover of the camera that was seen on the N97 has been removed in the Nokia N97 Mini. The plastic used in the construction of the Nokia N97 Mini seems to be a very effective fingerprint repellant and also appears to be resistant to most scratches. This is a welcome change for most people who know the exasperation one can sometime experience when expensive gadgets look like fingerprint magnets.

The front of the Nokia N97 Mini is dominated by an amazing touch screen that is capable of showing 16 million different colors and has a resolution of 360 x 640 pixels (which is exactly the same resolution as that of the original N97). The display is rich and bright and is easily seen in direct sunlight though some competitors have larger screens and higher resolutions, very few look as stunning as the Nokia N97 Mini.

The touch screen of the Nokia N97 Mini is a resistive touch screen which simply means that pressure needs to be applied to the screen for the touch to be registered. All Nokia touch screen phones use this resistive touch screen technology.

The call and end keys are both touch sensitive and are located below the screen, the actual arrangement of the buttons are very similar to that seen in the original Nokia N97. The Nokia N97 Mini is one of the best designed phones on the market today and comes with both a large touch screen and a comfortable QWERTY keypad like the original N97, but in a much lighter and cheaper package.
