I love reading, I do it whenever I get a chance to do so. However, Fight Club was an entirely new experience for me. Palahniuk's darkly comedic style keeps you reading page after page, and his subtle social commentary within the narration keeps you thinking and concentrating on the novel as a whole. It's the kind of book that's fairly rare these days. I like to refer to books like this as "interactive." It keeps you involved, by making you think about society and life, while giving you a brilliant story that keeps you on the edge of your seat.
The main character (who is never given a name, so we'll call him the narrator) is an insomnia sufferer who meets a new friend, Tyler Durden, who brings him into a new way of thinking and a new lifestyle. Eventually, the Narrator bites off more than he can chew, when he starts to convert other people to his way of thinking. It comments on the need for some people to latch onto a leader to feel important.
The story is also provocative and extremely original, Palahniuk truly shows his prowess as an author by giving us an idea that has never been used before, presenting it from a point of view that has never been seen, and writing it in a style that no one has used, and no one can copy.
This book is an absolute masterpiece in every sense of the word. It is one of my favorites, and though I have yet to read any of Chuck Palhniuk's other works, I plan to spend some time on Amazon.com later tonight to pick up a few more from this author. I would give this book a full 10 out of 10. I finished it in about two days, and I was surprised it took me that long. It's a short book, that will not let you put it down until you are finished reading. Whether you have or have not seen the movie, this book will hit you hard and knock you to the ground.
