A Review of the Ponderosa Steakhouse in Madison, Indiana

"I'm Hungry" Resulted in a Surprising Experience

The Ponderosa Steakhouse in Madison, Indiana provided us with a surprisingly outstanding dining experience on a recent trip to southern Indiana. Located at 327 Clifty Drive (SR 62) halfway between US 421 and SR7, this restaurant is easy to access.

The décor of this Ponderosa is typical of all buffets in this large, nationwide chain. This particular Ponderosa, however, was exceptionally clean. Our table was spotless, and did not have the wipe marks so often seen in a high volume buffet. The floors were also remarkably free from any remains from previous diners, also common in many such establishments.

We elected to have the buffet alone without any of the meal options offered at Ponderosa. I centered my choices on the meat selections, supplemented of course with the trimmings. The fried fish was excellent: Hot, crisp, and with a taste that was light, as opposed to the strong 'fishy' taste so often found in mass fried fish. The meat loaf presented was very good, with a slightly sweet sauce that was a cross between ketchup and sweet BBQ. Ponderosa is known for its delicious chicken wings, and this buffet fulfilled that reputation. The only meat item I did not like was a sliced pork roast that was rather greasy with too much fat.

The trimmings were excellent. Two styles of mashed potatoes, dressing, and gravies made for tough choices. I enjoyed a sample of each.

My wife chose the vegetables and other non-meat items. She enjoyed the fact that all the veggies were hot and crisp. A wide variety was available, which always makes for an enjoyable meal. We both had items from the salad bar, again fresh and tasty. Crisp lettuce is often lacking on a buffet, but was not a problem at this Ponderosa.

The dessert bar also did not disappoint us. After I had finished my meal, I debated whether or not to indulge in a dessert. I am glad I decided to partake of the cheesecake with strawberry topping. My wife also enjoyed some of the culinary delights on the dessert bar as well.

This Ponderosa is definitely above the norm for this chain of restaurants. The buffet was well stocked, the service was excellent, and the cleanliness made for a most enjoyable dining experience. We had water as our beverage and at $6.99 each for the buffet only, with tax the bill was only $14.96. A great value for an all you can eat buffet.

We once had Ponderosa in the area. I think it's gone, now. We also had Bonanza. I think there's something like a strip-club there, now!

We used to have many Pondorosa Steak houses in Florida, but I think that most closed. I used to love the food there but it has been a long time since I tasted it. Great report
