A Review of the Samsung S1050 Digital Camera

Missy Slink
Recently I purchased a new digital camera. The price was unbeatable-only one hundred and twenty-five dollars, even though the camera normally sold for around three hundred dollars. The website that I purchased the camera from, woot.com, provides various electronic items at wonderful prices for a day. The camera that I bought was a Samsung S1050, and I have not regretted the decision to buy. The Samsung S1050 has both its pros and cons, but I would strongly argue that the pros fairly greatly outweigh the cons.

Some of the more positive aspects of this camera include its superior zoom ability; compared to many other point-and-shoot cameras that have the usual 3x optical zoom, the S1050 offers its users a wonderful 5x optical zoom, while still being an easy to use point-and-shoot camera. Another positive component of this camera is its megapixels; the 10.1 megapixels allow for clearer photo taking than some of the other models. Additionally, the "s" option on the mode dial offers users the chance to take fast action photos, by simply adjusting the shutter speed. Of course, users can also slow down the shutter speed if they so desire, thereby creating some interesting photography affects in different lighting. Another fun feature of the Samsung S1050 is its "editing" option that allows users to change the lighting, coloring (to black and white, sepia, blue, etc), and even add fun effects such as a pig's nose onto their photos on the memory card of their camera.

However, like most technology, this camera also does have a few draw backs. I personally would not suggest buying this product at full price, as its features do not seem to warrant such a high price. However, if you can find this camera for a cheaper price (like I did), I would fully recommend investing in it. Besides the possible price, another negative aspect to this camera is its battery draining power. Although it does use up it's recommended battery (around a 2512voltage) in a reasonable period of time, any voltage less than that will most likely be eaten up rather quickly. Another problem that I ran into with this camera is that it sometimes freezes when deleting the last picture on the memory card. Although this may just be a technical problem that is rare in such cameras and I may have purchased a defective model, it still is a problem that can become rather annoying at times. A negative side to its otherwise high quality video taking option is that it doesn't have sound recording for its videos. Additionally, I find that the Samsung S1050 is probably not the best camera for up close shots-it is far more useful for far away objects.

Finally, one other component of the camera that can be either a positive or negative aspect is its size. The S1050 is much larger than many point-and-shoot digital cameras. It is more like the size of the old school film cameras, and is built much like one too. I personally like this, as it allows me to feel like I won't break it easily if I am a little rougher with it. However, the larger size does make it slightly more inconvenient to tote around everywhere, even though it is not nearly as large as some of the more expensive cameras on the market.
