A Review of Saw

Allie Bojko
In this review I'll talk about the movie Saw a movie that was produced roughly six years ago. Saw was specifically made to be a movie released straight to dvd, however since it did receive some high praises at the test screenings, it was given the green light for it to be shown on the big screen in October of '04 which just so happened to be just in time for Halloween. Saw's plot is quite unique in that it reveals everything and than about three quarters of the way through the movie it unravels another interesting concept towards the end of the movie, a great cliffhanger. It's certainly a remarkable movie with it's knack of being a thriller film, it'll make you feel the claustrophobia in the many scenes you'll witness and it'll definitely make you more aware of your surroundings including those that may be bladed appliances and or objects. What makes this movie's title that much more ironic is that there isn't any crazed chainsaw psychopath to speak of in this film, the only time you'll see a saw is when the two characters of the movie are faced with a situation in which they must use it to their very own expense.

As you already know there's two characters in the movie one named, Lawrence (played by Cary Elwes) and another named Adam (played by Leigh Whannell, whose not only the actor of the film but the film's screenwriter as well). When both men wake up they realize that there shackled to lead pipes in an ugly battered public restroom. In the very center of the room lies a decaying corpse body lying in their very own pile of blood, in one of his hands, is a hand gun and in the other there's a tape recorder. What the two men don't realize at first is that their the latest victims of a sick and deranged criminal mastermind known as the "Jigsaw Killer."

Jigsaw tortures his guests in a very unique way which is to put them in situations where they must complete the tasks their given whether it'll be to kill someone or solve a riddle, that is if they want to live another day. Lawrence explains to Adam that Jigsaw isn't really a killer only because he never actually killed someone, since it's his guests that do that for him. However their has been victims that have survived his crazy ordeals but eventually go through some brutal ways to do so. For instance one of his victims ends up cutting open a dead man's body to extract a key, they must use that key to unlock the bear trap device that's attached to their head just so they can survive, the victim ends up surviving. It's quite interesting as to how Jigsaw's character creates all of these games through his madness and realizes that his victims don't really value their life, whereas if they survive his games than they are finally rewarded and that is to continue there lives as they would normally.

Lawrence is the one character that truly knows a whole lot about Jigsaw as to where Adam doesn't have a single clue who he is. The reason why Lawrence knows so much about the Jigsaw killer is because he at one time was suspected by the cops for some of the heinous crimes that occurred but he never committed such acts. Adam doesn't trust Lawrence only because he's not telling him what he wants to hear about the Jigsaw killer which to him, makes Lawrence a little suspicious. They both realize that in order for them to make it through the nightmare that they find themselves in, they must work together and that is to play Jigsaw's games, surpass his tasks and to hopefully survive all of his shady ordeals. Although this movie isn't really an acting kind of movie it was still a pretty decent job on the actors that played their respected roles in the movie, it was really based on the talent of the director's hands, it was still a very pleasing movie to watch. Although this movie Saw does have some minor flaws, I did however enjoy it from the moment I walked in to the moment I left the theatre I was simply glued to my seat. I truly appreciate the individuals that have taken time out of their day to read this review I am certainly thankful for that.
