A Review of Shoots Chinese Restaurant in Provo, Utah

C. Leigh
Craving some old-fashioned spicy General Tsu's chicken? What about some sweet and sour chicken? If you're cruisin' for some casual, classic Chinese in Utah Valley, this might be a good option for you. It's location is great, settled in the river woods shopping center where you could do some shopping at some of your favorite stores or catch a movie at the Carmike Theater.

The atmosphere is clean and suitable. The floor plan is simple and easy to navigate. The staff was friendly and helpful but the service was a little slow on that Friday night. All predictable and traditional Chinese options are available on the menu. All things considered, this restaurant is a very average Asian option for lunch or dinner.

If you are looking for a place with fresh ideas and new spins on old tired dishes, this is probably not the place for you. The pricing was fair, but only about one dollar less than P.F. Chang's without the chic décor and tantalizing, tasty menu.

Shoots lacks variety in flavor- with very general Asian spices and a garlic sauce used in most dishes. The portion size is average even though you feel like you should be getting more for the price, like some egg rolls or another side. The only appetizer brought to all tables are fried strips of egg roll shell with basic sweet and sour sauce for dipping. It's different, but a little cheap and effortless looking.

The layout is simple, but almost too simple. The décor is not very interesting as well as the seating arrangements. If you like sitting in a booth, you won't be pleased, Shoots offers tables and chairs only. About 1/3 of the seats are right up against the window where you are directly subjected to the weather outside- hot or cold. You are sitting in large rectangular room with everyone else within an earshot of your conversation. The table's are a tight squeeze and not designed for a romantic evening out.

This place is okay for a casual, uninteresting lunch- not a special date night. P.F. Chang's is still a much better choice for about a dollar more.
