A Review of The Sport of Kite-Surfing

Keith Dailey
The idea began with a kite being used to propel ships and carts and moved toward putting them to use with roller skates, snow skis and water skis.

Kite flying has been a pastime for both children and adults for many years. As with anything, the kite concept has been used with in order to diversify it and other activities. Kite-surfing is one of those sports that have come about through taking the kite's propulsion ability and pairing it with a surfboard. The kites used in kite-surfing are referred to as power kites; as they are of a size, shape and design that make the most out of the concept.

It takes little overall design changing in order to turn a simple kit flying activity into a thrill ride across the water. Although the concept of using the propulsion of the kite to move things was out of necessity at one time, individuals worked on the concept to turn it into an entertaining sport. Better control of the kites came in the 1970's, while in 1984 a design that could be inflated was introduced.

For use in better propulsion across the water the inflatable tubes and bridle system was utilized. Skis were first used and then the surfboard or kiteboard was implemented. With the emergence of kite-surfing as a mainstream sport, also came the emergence of kite-surfing schools.

The kite-surfing schools teach the skills needed to adequately take on the activity of kite-surfing. Kite-surfers so not simply jump into the activity, they need to learn each individual aspect and then how to combine them all together successfully. It is much too easy to misunderstand the equipment to go out on your own and try to learn. It is best for an individual new to the concept to go to a reputable certified kite-surfing instructor.

In kite-surfing instruction the students learn launching the kite, flying, proper utilization of the bar, lines and safety devices, and landing. Individuals thinking about taking up the sport need to know that kite-surfing is not as easy as it may look from just watching from a distance. There are many mistakes that can easily be made by a kite-surfer if they are not properly trained in the activity. A student must consider the type of kite they are using, the size and the set up. Not only do they need to know how to properly operate the kite, but they need to know how to maintain it as well.

After learning all there is about the kite and how it works, students then have to learn proper body-dragging. Students are dragged through the water by the flying of the power kite. Instead of being pulled forward such as with body surfing, the kite lifts the individual upward. There is some danger to the sport of kite-surfing, which is why it is restricted in some areas.

Before attempting the sport of kite-surfing be sure you are well educated on all aspects of it. It is not a cheap sport to participate in, as equipment such as booties, gloves, hood, wetsuit and life vest may need to be purchased; not to mention the cost of the varying types of kites.
