In addition to offering attractions such as flightseeing, the town has a charm all of its own. There are several shops that visitors can peruse. These range from artist galleries to craft shops that feature merchandise created by area artisans.
You will want to stop by the Talkeetna Artist Gallery. Here, the work of several artists is showcased. The eye-catching stylized sign catches your attention. As you enter the building you are greeted by a mural that leads you to the top of the stairs.
The downside to this visit is that we did not see an elevator. If you have problems climbing steps this may not be the visit for you. However, if you can navigate the flight of steps you will be greeted with a tempting array of high quality artistic goods. You can choose from hand beaded jewelry, art for your wall, a selection of children's' books, scarves and other hand woven items.
Down the street from the gallery is the famous West Rib Restaurant. This place is named for the west rib of Denali. They do not have ribs on the menu nor do they have barbecue of any kind. What they do have is burgers, seafood dishes, Coca-Cola products and good service.
Across from the West Rib is an ice cream shop. To me, the day seemed too cold for ice cream. Some of the people we were with tried it and said it was excellent.
Railroading history is big in Alaska. Talkeetna is no exception. I did enjoy seeing the train engine and perusing the other shops.
There are several places to stay in Talkeetna, Alaska. These range from cabins to a campground. There are a few "B&B" locations (Bed and Breakfast) and inns. In downtown, there is even a cute looking hostel.
The restaurants consist mainly of sandwich shops and inns. The exception is the West Rib Pub that was already mentioned.
There is more to do in Talkeetna, Alaska, than shop. Visitors can bring a picnic to enjoy at the covered pavilion in downtown. This is right next to the train station.
Flightseeing is a popular activity here. The flights will take you around Denali Mountain which is the tallest peak in North America. It is also called Mt. McKinley. Some flights will land on a glacier and allow you to get out and walk, touch and feel it. Others will take you farther up the mountain. How far and how high you go is largely up to you and your budget.
Hiking and walking, fishing and sled dog rides also top the list of things to do in Talkeetna, Alaska. A complete list of shops and activities can be found at the Chamber of Commerce website here.
You don't want to forget the many gift shops and tourist stores. These are a must if you visit Talkeetna, Alaska! There is a wide variety and truly offer something for everyone. In addition to the artist gallery there is Talkeetna Gifts and Collectibles, The Mountain Shop and the Beadberry Patch and more.
History buffs will love the history and old town style charm.
If you visit the area you'll want to be sure to stop by Talkeetna, Alaska. It's an interesting trip to add to your existing plans or a fun destination. View the virtual tour here.
