A Review of Time Warner's RoadRunner ISP in Columbus, OH

Miss Faith
As far as ISP's go, I have tried both dial-up and cable. Currently I have Road Runner through Time Warner in Columbus, OH. Sure, high speed is faster than dial-up when loading pages, surfing the web, and downloading files and programs. But there is also a down side to high speed. Besides the obvious problems, such as more possibilities of intrusion and hacking due to high speed being "on" constantly, there seems to be another problem. I am not sure if this is with Time Warner in general, or if other cable providers face this problem as well, but at least once a week (in the least) I face a total loss of connection. The first time I experienced this problem, I thought it may be a less than adequate cable modem or wireless router that I was using on my home network. Surprisingly, after testing the wireless network connection I found that it was not the equipment but the ISP. I actually had called Time Warner's customer service line and found via recording that there was an outage in the area for Road Runner clients. This seemed to be the case every time the service "went down".

So I began to wonder if having high speed was worth the problems that came with it. Well, since I am a network security professional, the idea of having added intrusion due to my connection always being "on" didn't bother me. By taking some simple steps, it's fairly easy to "lock down" your system. The problem that concerned me the most was the fact that I was losing service connection at least once a week, but normally more. After contacting Time Warner and getting the run around on the problem, they never once offered to deduct anything from our bill to make us happy and keep us as customers. Why would they do this? Because they are the biggest provider in the Columbus area for actual high speed internet service.

So even with all of the weekly problems with the ISP, would I still recommend their service? Yes, but only because they are the most accessible and fastest service in the area. I am going to be moving to a different area of Ohio within the next couple of months and I am hoping to find a different ISP such as Comcast once I get settled. I believe that even though the connection and the 1st year of price for Road Runner was fair, I would rather look for a more reliable ISP for future use. When you depend on your connection to be on when needed, it makes it a pretty easy choice on whether to drop a company or not. I depend on my service daily, since I work from home and also take college courses online. When my connection is not there, that means I cannot be productive and do my job. So even though I lose money, Time Warner refuses to lose money by deducting a certain amount of time from my bill every month. To me, this is not a good way to do business and keep customers happy. So what's my final verdict? If you can live without Road Runner in the greater Columbus, OH area then I suggest you do so. In the end, it's not worth the headaches.

  • RoadRunner offers high speed internet access that's always "on", supposedly.
  • Is it really worth the headaches of having an ISP that is "down" at least once a week?
  • Where do you turn if you only have one high speed ISP in your area?

If any of you Columbus TW users had bothered reading up on cable internet, you may have noticed that theservice gets worse when more people are nearby using the same provider. Thus, since its the best you can get in Columbus, i'd guess that half of your neighborhood has it which means you are all sapping the main line and speeds are crap for everyone.

I myself would never be dumb enough to get cable internet in an urban area, at least not until the providers upgrade to fiber optics (which they have done in some places). I'd go after a DSL service if I lived in columbus since the deals on high-end DSL are much cheaper per month than similar cable prices. Cable is just better because the high-end versions far surpass DSL.

I have TW RR turbo with powerboost here in Ada, Ohio and my service is great. The downloads speeds are currently the best among widely available. Wait awhile and once all cable companies upgrade internet to fiber-optic, the top speeds (around 20MB/S now) will more

I have lived in several parts of the USA and have had the most trouble with rr in columbus. They drop out of service quite often and all they did for me is blame my modem and give me theirs - which of course is no help at all. Glad I a moving away.

  • I LOVE WOWWAY 7/4/2009

Go with WOWWAY in Columbus, Ohio, if they service your area. Time Warner has had their upload speeds set at 90kbps (actual UP SPEEDS) for FIVE YEARS now. WOWWWAY has their top speeds at (for uploads) 256kbps (1/4 mbps). Go with WOWWAY, if they service your area!!!

I live in Wichita Falls, TX and I experience the same problems with no ISP connection and/or slow broad band speeds. It happens at least 2 times a week at various times when I get on-line (early in morning and late eve).Their service people are in Canada so they have no idea of what is going on in our area. I have friends that have RR and they experience similar problems. With the exception of what I mentioned earlier I am satisfied with the speed when it is fully "connected"

I agree 100% about RoadRunner in Columbus. Their service is completely unreliable, ridiculously slow for broadband cable, and their technical and sales staff are idiots. If only there was some genuine competition here, I would dump them in a heartbeat.

Well, I am thinking of switching to RR, live in central ohio, near mansfield. Had dial up, through core comm, which is pretty good, but slow for last couple of weeks, think I am connected, then do not go anywhere! but you guys are scaring me, about RR! Do you think DSL, would be better!

I have had road runner in columbus for about a year and have yet to experience any regular outages. As far as comcast goes I have heard nothing but bad things. http://consumeraffairs.com/news04/2007/08/comcast_ban.html?imw=Y
for a little taste of their business practices.

It's pretty bad in the Raleigh/Durham, NC area too.
At least once a week...yesterdays outage lasted 12 hrs.

Time Warner RR in the Bexley area. No significant interuptions in the year I have had it. A new cable out to your pole may well solve the issue. 80% of periodic fialures I have dealt with were older wires between the modem and the pole.
