A Royal Distraction: The Wedding of Will and Kate

That Which Distracts, Delights

Nancy Tracy
Upon a stage of chaos and collapse
A royal couple enters from stage left.
Their velvet charm a ruse to soothe, perhaps,
The trampled masses, battered and bereft
From legal pirates plundering their wealth
And laughing at their own audacious scheme
Like brazen dogs, they had no need for stealth
With thirsty tongues they lapped up all the the cream.
As leaders tighten belts and shake their heads
Complicit in the theft, their subjects' plight,
They welcome news of royals to be wed
Their brilliant crowns and coaches -- what a sight!
This pageantry, like Prozac for the masses,
A legal drug distracting them from woe
Has royal-gawking crones and lithesome lasses
Just salivating for this dazzling show.
For when the night is darkest and most dire
We crave the spark from even distant fire.

Ha! For all the pomp and ceremony of the Charles and Di wedding, look at how long the marriage lasted. True and faithful love is better than royal weddings!

I enjoyed your sonnet in honor of the upcoming royal wedding!

Interesting subject for your verse. My son's wedding held more of my attention, however. He married on skis. I tried not to fall down.

Great poem. Not big on royals... but will watch the wedding. I think the world has felt for William since he lost his mom so young, and it will be nice to see this happy event.

Aha! Another competitor in the sonnet contest. Break a leg.

Excellent. I'll probably miss the wedding due to my own personal distractions, but I always admired Diana and two of our children are the same age, so I feel an affinity for that family.

Distractions are always welcome - and are often created - by those who have a lot to lose should people notice what is really going on (that actually matters.)
