A Safe and Healthy Home: Household Cleaners

If any of you have ever looked at the ingredients in most of the common household cleaners on the market today you've probably been shocked and outraged. I know I am. Some of these things we buy to make our home cleaner and safer can actually make us very ill. In fact, some, like Fabreeze, have been blamed for making our children and small pets far sicker than simply not cleaning our homes likely would have. Does that mean we shouldn't clean?

Of course not!

What it means is that we have to clean safer and smarter. It's not as hard as you might think, and it's fairly inexpensive as well. Essential oils are wonderful tools for keeping your home clean safely. Let's take that Fabreeze I mentioned earlier. Most of us use this product, or products like it, to clean and sanitize while eliminating odors in our environment, completely oblivious to the potential dangers these products represent. Using distilled water and essential oils, however, you can get the same or better results without the risk. Here's an example of how. In a clean and empty pump spray bottle add 50 drops of lavender oil, 30 drops of clove bud oil, and 20 drops of peppermint for every 4 ounces of purified water. This solution is wonderful! It cleans, kills germs, and leaves behind a wonderful clean and fresh scent. It's also completely safe for you and your family, including children and small animals.
