A Scrub Nurse's Poem: I Know What It's Like

Kim Keason
I know what it's like to hold your heart in my hand
To feel it still beating
Even though it's sick and feeble

I know what it's like to hold your heart in my hand
As it goes into you
A healthy heart to give you back your life

I know what it's like to hold back tears
To steel myself so you won't see any weakness
As I assure you your child is in excellent hands

I know what it's like to hold back tears
When I realize I was the last person to talk to you in this life
I hope I said comforting things

I know what it's like to be tired
Falling asleep while walking
Transplanting lungs for 36 hours straight

I know what it's like to be tired
Drifting off at 3am while standing
Waiting to pass the next stitch

I know what it's like to stand in one spot
For nine hours without a break
Only to feel defeat in seconds

I know what it's like to stand for twelve hours straight
To find out later you went home
To a loving family

I know what it's like to ache from my hair to my toes
Wishing I could just sit down
Knowing that sleep will repair my muscles and joints

I know what it's like to ache from my hair to my toes
Knowing that those few hours out of my life
Gave you back to your family

Kim, this is such a beautiful picture of all that nurses contribute. God forbid we should ever have to deal with a world without such loving people.

I think nurses do not get the accolades they deserve. My niece is a nurse so I know what you go through! This is a beautiful way to express to the world how you feel as a nurse! I will share it with my niece. :)

Okay, pass the tissues please! I visited my surgical nurse in the Westchester Medical Center many months after my brain surgery. She came down every day for 6 weeks to check on me. When I saw her again after I was discharged, she wrapped her arms around me and said, "I wasn't sure you'd make it - thanks for showing me that you did!" I'll never forget her either :) Beautifully written, cheers for the nurses :)
