A Second Earthquake in Less Than Six Months Devastates Christchurch, New Zealand

How Much More Can the People of This Quaint City Endure?

Fran Brockmyre
My husband and I were dismayed and saddened when we heard of the devastating earthquake that hit Christchurch, New Zealand yesterday, February 22. One month ago we began our "Trip of a Lifetime" in Christchurch. Christchurch had recently experienced a powerful earthquake in September and we saw the results of this earthquake. The city had been experiencing aftershocks as recently as the morning of our arrival in Christchurch.

When the earthquake occurred in September there were no reported injuries or deaths. There was structural damage to many of the older buildings but they were intact and able to be repaired. As we strolled through this quaint and beautiful city we noticed scaffolding holding up many buildings. The bricks that had fallen were gathered and saved in piles so that the buildings could be restored.

Sadly yesterday's earthquake caused death and injury and destroyed many of these historic buildings. Much of the Christchurch Cathedral, a popular tourist destination, was destroyed. The earthquake occurred at 1:00pm; I am sure that there were many visitors inside the cathedral at this time. A month ago, my husband and I would have been among them.

When we were in Christchurch we learned that the area could expect earthquakes for another three years. I don't know how this is determined, but if it is true there will be nothing left of the city. The residents of Christchurch, as well as all of New Zealand, are warm and friendly. A popular phrase in New Zealand is "no worries." Unfortunately, after the first earthquake and its aftershocks, the people of Christchurch were stressed and nervous. Now, after yesterday's devastation, there are many worries.

(I have included some photos taken on our vacation before the devastating earthquake of yesterday.)
