A Secure Physical Environment for Children

Brenda Hoffman
A quality preschool will definitely be able to create a safe physical environment for the children therein. This can be a daunting task for some preschools but it is important. If children don't feel safe, they aren't going to want to come to school, which will create a life long problem with learning for them. Fortunately, there are some things that you can do to ensure that you are running a quality preschool with a secure physical environment.

Creating a Welcoming Learning Environment

Students are able to learn best whenever their quality preschool is both safe and comfortable. This is why it is important to get to know each of your students and to treat all of them equally. The best way in which to do this is through group activities that foster respect for everyone involved. It is also important to make sure that nobody is laughing at or teasing someone else. Children need to feel safe enough to share their thoughts, try new ideas and make mistakes that they can learn from.

Setting Boundaries

Part of helping children to feel safe and secure in your quality preschool is to establish boundaries and rules within the classroom. These rules should dictate how your students behave and interact with one another. They should also be simple and straight forward. Otherwise your preschoolers will become overwhelmed and older children may choose to rebel, then you will no longer have a quality preschool. This is why it is a good idea to engage children in the rule-making process whenever possible. Of course, you always need to make sure to clearly state the rules and why they must be followed. The consequences also need to be clearly stated.

Avoiding Accidents

Designing a quality preschool classroom and learning area is rather straight forward to do. However, there are a lot of dangers that you may easily overlook until there is an accident. Of course, the precise environment within your quality preschool will depend on your children's age, which is why it is so important to understand their developmental abilities. One of the most common things that you need to be on the lookout for here is furniture with sharp edges. You will want to avoid it at all times since most preschoolers are still developing their large motor skills and thus may fall down occasionally. It is also important to consider the age of the children who are in your quality preschool. If any of them have behavioral problems or developmental disabilities you may need to make even further alterations to the room in order to keep these children safe. With this being said, you should know that you should never hesitate to change a classroom to keep your students safe.

In Conclusion

Now that you know the importance of running a quality preschool with a secure physical environment, it is time to stand up and take some action. Look around you and make sure that this is the type of preschool you are running. If not, it's time to implement the aforementioned tips to make changes for the better.
