A Short Poem About the '80's

John Smither
The eighties as I recall
Were far from being a ball

The music was new wave to punk
Some I can still remember, some was, well junk

Margaret Thatcher, high inflation
Many strikes, active trades unions, all quite a situation

The collapse of communism
Leading to a new mechanism

Tiananmen Square protest
Tanks to quell the unrest

One highlight, is the fall
Of the infamous Berlin Wall

After the Ethiopian famine report
Live Aid faced world wide support

Ronald Reagan becoming US President
Quite a step up for the screen gent

Olympics and boycotts in Moscow and LA
Jamaicans enter the bobsleigh

The launch of MTV
The birth of music videos, long before the launch of DVD

These are some of the highlights
In this poem of 80's delights

Well written John! I read somewhere that one of the casinos in Las Vegas had imported a large piece of the berlin wall to use as a back splash for the urinals. So if your in Vegas, and find it, you can make another berlin wall statement by relieving yourself on it.

Good poem. Guess I never thought about it but not all things about the 80s were positive.

This is great, John! Except....I loved the 80's! Back then I was pretty, young, and thin. Those days were great. ;-)
