A Silver Lining Foundation Receives Grant from Komen Chicago Affiliate to Support Underserved Patients
The Chicagoland Area Affiliate of Susan G. Komen for the Cure Has Awarded a $75,000 Grant to a Silver Lining Foundation
At ASLF, the grant from Komen for the Cure will support ASLF's Buy A Mom A Mammogram program, an initiative to fund screening mammograms and diagnostic evaluation services for Chicago's underserved community. The program will also support the creation of an additional community outreach health fair hosted by ASLF.
"It's an honor to be recognized from such a distinguished organization as the Susan G. Komen for the Cure, which has a mission so similar to that of A Silver Lining Foundation," said ASLF founder and breast cancer survivor Dr. Sandy Goldberg. "We are grateful for the support of the foundation, and with this grant, we hope to continue our mission to ensure dignified, respectful and equal access to quality cancer education and services for all."
Susan G. Komen for the Cure is the world's largest breast cancer organization, and the Chicagoland Affiliate is one of 125 Affiliates on the front lines dedicated to ending breast cancer in their communities. Komen Affiliates fund innovative programs that help women and men overcome the cultural, social, education and financial barriers to breast cancer screening and treatment.(more)
"At the Komen Chicagoland Affiliate, we conducted a needs assessment of our community and discovered ASLF's Buy A Mom A Mammogram program," said executive director Michael Ziener. "We are confident that through ASLF's Buy A Mom A Mammogram, uninsured and underinsured patients will have access to the care they need."
About A Silver Lining Foundation
Since the Buy A Mom A Mammogram program's inception in 2006, ASLF has provided more than 2,500 women with information about and access to no cost screening mammograms. In response to the growing number of women needing follow up due to a possible abnormality, the foundation began funding diagnostic testing in 2007. Since its launch in 2002, ASLF has provided more than 450,000 people with information about cancer resources, treatment options and support services. Through the organization's programs, services and personal support, the foundation strives to provide opportunities for medically underserved people affected by cancer.
The philosophy of the foundation is based on two phrases Dr. Goldberg's late mother used to live by: "No matter what your situation, you have to see the silver lining," and "We are all family, and we have to help each other through the tough times." With 50 million Americans currently living without health insurance, the Buy A Mom A Mammogram program provides a silver lining to those in need.
ASLF's administrative offices are located at 134 N. LaSalle, Ste. 1218, Chicago, 60602. The organization runs three cancer related programs: Buy A Mom A Mammogram , the Chicagoland Cancer Information Coalition (CCIC) and The Evelyn Goldberg Center at the University of Illinois Medical Center at Chicago.
