A Simple and Complex Truth

D. Calhoun
There are some theologians who, because of their education and intelligence, have very sophisticated and complex concepts about the nature of God. And, conversely, I am sure, there are some storefront preachers who possess, and are motivated by, quite simple and direct ideas about God. Even though the attributes posited about the nature of the Supreme Being have much to do with the person who conceptualizes them, this is not to say that Truths about God are not both simple and complex at the same time.

Such concepts as Love, Forgiveness, The Redemption of Sin, and Karma are both quite simple and quite complex. For instance, the idea "Love your enemy," would have been a very foreign and counter intuitive concept for the average Ancient Man; however, it is quite obvious to most Modern Men that there can be no hope for a peaceful life, if every malicious act, triggers a malicious response. One's life, and the world as a whole, would be awash in constant suffering and turmoil, without forgiveness. The Law of Karma is also an easy concept to grasp as a moral cause and effect; yet there is no limit to the degree of difficult, nuanced, and complex ethical situations that can be adjudicated by Karma.

A truly awesome aspect of God's power, perfection, and beauty resides in the fact that His nature and attributes do manifest themselves as both simple and complex simultaneously. The ability to experience these divine attributes as living truths is one of the universal quests of mankind. Persons who come into contact with God come to know these complex and simple truths. God is a living and personal God, and we too are sentient beings. Everyone has access to these divine truths. From the mere faithful believer to saints, prophets, and mystics, coming into contact with the God's work in ones life is a powerful and enlightening experience. No one can say for sure exactly what any particular Old Testament Prophet actually experienced beyond that of receiving a divine message to share with the world. Nor, can anyone more than speculate what a mystic truly experiences when he comes into contact with God.

Faithful believers come to know the Lord through many seemingly unique and custom tailored experiences. The journey often begins with an acute tragedy and suffering. Often it begins with the earnest and sincere request from the petitioner, as in: "Seek and ye shall find; Ask and the door will be opened," which is promised in The Holy Scripture of the New Testament. Many who are impatient for their encounter with the Supreme, may start with fasting and much prayer. Those familiar with Eastern religions usually begin their search with the practice of chanting, yoga, or meditation. Of course, the goal is the same - a close encounter, or experience of the Divine.

Many seers and mystics have put into words descriptions of their experiences and they are available in both great books and esoteric texts; however, most of the true Saints and Swamis would rather guide the earnest seeker who have come to them into actually having the Divine Experience for themselves.

This encounter can be described as: "being in union with the Supreme Being." There is a place where the consciousness of an individual, tangibly connects with the Consciousness of the Supreme Being. Finding this place of connection, and experiencing being in that place, is what the Guru (spiritual teacher) can help you do.

Once you have experienced this place, the profound and indescribable joy and beauty of God's simple and complex reality is fully understood. No complex theories or extensive education is necessary. In addition, the veil of the illusion that you were ever a separate being is lifted, and you understand truly what is meant when the mystics tell you that there is only one God and that we are all fundamentally connected. A both simple, and yet complex, truth.
