Every woman has a different shape. Most of us try to hide those areas we don't like and forget about using clothes to flatter our attributes. There are some simple things that women can do to ensure that the clothes they wear do both! Here are a few tips on how to dress to flatter your shape.

The first step in knowing what clothes will work best for your body type is to figure out exactly what your body type is. There are four basic body shapes.

* The apple body type makes up about 14% of the female population. This shape is characterized by a bust that is at least three inches larger than the hip. Keys styles to wear that will flatter your shape will emphasize your legs, rear, neck and bust. You will want to avoid drawing attention to your waist and arms.

* About 46% of women have a rectangular or straight body type. These women typically have waists that are about the same as their hips and bust. One way to flatter this shape is to belt the waist so to show some curves.

* Women with a larger bottom than top are called pear-shaped. There are some simple tricks that will help you make your rear slimmer. However, some of us rather like a bigger booty!

* Only about 8% of all women are blessed with a symmetrical hourglass type figure. Curves are made to show, so flatter your figure.

If you want to accentuate your waist, the best way is with belts. For the straight shape this will give the look of pretty and soft curves. But if you are apple shaped don't try this. You will look better in longer, flowing tops that cover your extra waist. Empire waists are also a good way to emphasize your good points while hiding those not so flattering areas.

A larger bust looks well with a top that crosses over your chest. But if you are pear or square shaped this type of top or dress will make you look even smaller.

Longer legs are flattering for any body type. For those that are apple or straight shaped, pants with a flair will look better than a straight-leg style. Mini-skirts and brightly colored tights can show off great legs too. Shorter or pear shaped women will want to do the opposite. Tight pants that hug your ankle will give you the look of longer legs, especially when wearing heels. Resist to urge to wear flared pants because they can make your legs look fat. Pants with stripes that go vertically can also lengthen your leg.

You don't want to forget to shape your bust properly. If you have been well-endowed, it is extremely important to wear a bra that properly supports you. Take the time to visit a shop with a professional who can fit you. You will be amazed at what this can do for you. Not only will you feel better, you will look better. For this, you will want to have lots of V-neck styles both in dresses, sweaters, and other tops.

If you are one with a smaller bust, then don't wear heavy jewelry. Instead, use bracelets to focus attention elsewhere. Also, wear tops that are solid and save the patterns for your bottom half.

Dark and solid colors are great for hiding flaws. Patterns and brighter clothing should be worn in areas you want to show off.

These are some tried and true tips on how to dress to flatter your shape and make dressing your body style easy and less of a mystery.
