One of the simplest, most cost effective ideas for home improvement is landscaping. If you wanted to do so, you could hire a professional. But, this is not necessary for most installations. You can easily add a mulch bed to your property either on your own, or as a family project.
The fist step is to take a look at your yard. What colors and shapes are there already? What kind of plants are around? Do you have existing mulch beds? Is there a theme to your property?
Once you have this information, you can come up with a plan of your own. Take the answers to those questions, a pencil and paper, and sketch out a general design. Any shape or color will do for this step. Right now you are only looking for a basic idea.
Next, it's off to the greenhouse. There are a lot of great deals at the large home improvement and garden centers. But, take a look at the smaller, 'mom n pop' greenhouses too, as this is where you will usually find better quality.
Take your design with you as you shop. Look at everything so that you will have a better idea of all of your choices. Have fun here. Get the plants that you believe will go together in your yard. You can ask advice from the owner or manager at the facility if you like. But, ultimately, these are the plants that you will have to live with every day, so it is your choice.
While you are there you can pick up soil, fertilizer, and mulch too. This is where the employees can be of the most assistance. Pay attention to their advice here. These are the people who have raised the plants that you have decided to take home.
Now you have your supplies at home. Hopefully you also picked up a shovel and some gloves as well. All that is left is the installation. While you work, please remember to protect yourself from the sun, flying debris, and other hazards as well.
You normally will not need to worry about utility lines and pipes for a small mulch bed. But, if you are putting in a pond, or large trees and shrubs, you should call a utility location company, such as Miss Utility. They will come to your house and mark the location of underground utilities for free.
It is time to tear it up. That's right, don't be afraid. Stick the shovel in and rip up the sod. The goal here is to remove all existing grass and roots from the location. Go ahead and 'turf out' the entire bed.
Once you have removed the sod, it is time to add soil. Then place your new flowers, herbs, shrubs, and trees wherever you want them. The only rule is that you should heed the sunlight, and planting requirements of each.
After installing the plants, simply scatter the fertilizer appropriately. Remember to follow the recommendations of the greenhouse and the manufacturer, as well as the instructions on the plant.
Lastly you will place the mulch. Put it on nice and thick. Mulch helps to hold in moisture and prevent weed growth in your new mulch bed. Most mulch also contains mild insecticides. So, don't forget to wash up thoroughly after you are done.
Now you have a new yard. The design and color should reflect your taste and tell the world, "Hey, look at my yard." And, so they will.
