A Single Mothers Guide to Puberty in Boys

Ambriel Maji
In today's society many single mothers are raising boys. When it comes to understanding about male puberty many moms may be loss in understanding how to talk to their son's or understanding the changes that are going.

Changes in the body that you will notice are your son will grow taller as his shoulders broaden and the muscles get stronger. The voice will grow deeper and you will start to notice hair growing on the face, underarms and pubic region. The skin starts to sweat more often and becomes oily. There are new stronger emotions and feelings. There are also physical changes starting around the penis.

Puberty happens anywhere between the ages of 10 to 15 in boys. Puberty begins when the brain starts to signal the pituitary gland to release puberty hormones. The hormones will travel through the blood system to the testicles, which will signal the testicles to produce testosterone. These hormones will signal all the changes they take effect during puberty. These hormones are also responsible for producing sperm.

Single Mother Guide Tip: During puberty many boys will experience breast tissue growth. This is nothing to be alarmed over, its a little swelling and tenderness around one or both sides of the chest area. This is caused due to the boy's body getting use to the hormones, if you are worried about breast swelling talk to your medical care provider.

Remember boys are going through a lot emotionally during puberty. Some boys may get upset, stressed, worried, angry or sad. It's best to get them a guide on puberty about how to deal with this sudden new onset of emotions.

As hard as it is for some moms to talk to their sons about puberty and the changes "down there" we have no choice as parents. For the most part at least some of this is covered in sex education in school. It may do your son good to explain to him that he is going to have unexpected erections and it's just a normal part of puberty. During puberty an erection can happen at any time for no reason at all.

Keep in mind when puberty is on the horizon this is when kids become more curious about sex. This is a good time to talk to your son and share your values and beliefs with them about sex.

This guide serves a condensed guide to puberty in males. If anything unexpected comes up or you have more questions it's always best to talk to your medical care provider to get the answers you need.
