A Slacker's Guide to Mooching

Matthew Schieltz
After high school teenagers graduate, most of their parents want them out of the house and in college or some other place where they'll be out on their own. We all know that this doesn't work out, though, and there are a variety of reasons for an adult child to move back home and live with their mother and father. And why shouldn't we be allowed to move back home, right? High school graduates everywhere probably recognize that their parents have a duty to take care of them for as long as they're living at home. There are many ways in which an adult child who cannot support him or herself fully yet can live out home. Usually this is referred to as mooching, but there are also several levels of mooching which this article will set out to define.

The Dependent Moocher

This is a college student or other young adult who either has a job or does not, but doesn't contribute to the household chores in any way at all; furthermore, this type of moocher will not pay room, board, and may even ask for money every now and then for a concer ticket, clothing, or other necessary personal expenses. A dependent moocher is the most dangerous kind of moocher because it not only doesn't require the young adult to have responsibility for themselves, but also this is the most difficult type of moocher to push out of the house when they have outstayed their welcome.

The Working Moocher

Another type of moocher that lives with their parents is called the Working Moocher. This young adult, college student or not, will actually work a part time or full time job and save some money. The main goal of mooching for this person is to be able to save on room, board, food, clothing, and other necessary expenses, all while building a savings account for when they finally do move out of the house. However, the Working Moocher will contribute to household chores and do whatever they can for their parents. They may even help out with grocery bills, but not to the point where it would seem like that they are paying for the whole week or month of groceries.

When it comes to pushing the Working Moocher out of the house and trying to convince him or her that they need to move on, this type of moocher may say that they will begin the process of moving out of the house, but never actually will. For them, procrastination is the key and they will never actually move out of the house until much later.

The Independent Moocher

Opposite from the Dependent Moocher, the Independent Moocher will actually pay room, board, all of his or her personal expenses, and even may help out with the household chores. They are totally self-sufficient and just may be living at home because they don't want to move out on their own for a variety of reasons. The Independent Moocher is probably the easiest mooching individual to convince that he or she needs to move out, but gets along with their parents very well and does nothing to disrespect them or their house rules.

Of course, there are several more types of moochers and some other mooching individuals may have characteristics of all three types of moochers. But the three that have been thus defined are the major categories of moochers that live with their parents for some reason or another, but also are the ones that should be pushed out of the house simply because they need a taste of what the real world will give them! If you're living with a Moocher, being aware of what type they are may just help you convince them to change their ways and move out!
