A Sniper's Guide to Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2

Brandon Miller
Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 has one of the most intense multiplayer battles. I can honestly admit that I am feared competitor in most of the rounds that I enter. Not because I am the fastest or bring the biggest guns, but because I have taught myself to become an expert MW2 sniper. Here are some of the tips and tricks that will make you an unstoppable asset to your team.

Your Weapon of Choice

There are four sniper rifles in Modern Warfare - Intervention, Barrett .50Cal, WA2000, M21 EBR. When you select your weapon, your focus should be on power and accuracy. Personally, I feel that the intervention is the best rifle in the game. Some people would disagree since it is the only sniper rifle that is a single shot. In my opinion, this matters very little if you are able to take down your target with the first shot. My advice would be to play at least five rounds with each before you make your decision.

Tip - Since different scopes and perks affect the performance of the weapon, try several different combinations before ruling out a rifle.

Choose your Scope Wisely

As a sniper, you will spend a large portion of your time scanning the horizon through your scope. You will need to select a scope that works for you. Since you can only have two accessories attached to your weapon, I always stick to the default scope. However, there are perks to using the Thermal and ACOG scopes. The thermal scope makes enemies easy to spot, but is useless if the enemy players are using the Cold-Blooded perk. The ACOG scope keeps your aim really steady, but has a limited magnification and makes far away targets hard to hit.

Pick the Right Hiding Spot

Regardless of the weapon, perks, or other equipment that you bring into the round, the thing that separates that nooby and veteran snipers is their chosen sniping post. Here are several attributes that will help you determine which sniping points are the best in the game.

Get to Higher Ground. Always make sure that your sniping spot is as far above the playing field as possible. This will reduce your enemies ability to hid and counterattack.

Keep your Back to the Wall. Try to find a spot where you can't be snuck up on from behind. The best spots can be found along the outer rim of the match arena.

Distance. Make sure that you can see as much of the battlefield as possible. This will keep help always keep enemies in your sights and gives you control over a major portion of the match arena.

Keep your Spot Protected. Face it, being a good sniper draws a lot of attention. Ask a teammate to help watch your back as you pick off enemy soldiers. If you cant have a teammate help, strategically hide a few claymores near access points to your spot.

Abandon Ship. Even the best snipers with the best spots will eventually get overrun by the enemy. Try and find several great spots that are all close together. That way, you can switch between a few spots throughout that game so that it is difficult for the enemy to predict where you are going to be. Using this strategy will keep your death count down and your enemies' fear up.
