A Soldiers Nightmare

Matthew Shively
I found myself deep in a sleep
Not knowing that my dreams would creep
Upon me so frigidly through the night
Once again I was in a dream of fright

So real to me that I could not accept as true
Once again a soldier in combat deciding what to do
I feel dirty and am sweating profusely
Almost like I have been here a while unconsciously

I see the enemy up ahead and my adrenaline pumps like lead
Through my chest and head
It is time to remain steady; there could be many
I remain completely aware and listen intently

It is time to advance and neutralize the enemy
Where did he go I couldn't see
My heartbeat is deafening and breathing thunderous
I must control myself; I am so nervous

The fight begins from above and sounds become stale
My ears are ringing; where they are I must unveil
I only saw two so I took a shot
They went down quickly; I wasn't caught

It becomes soundless the adversary departed
Shaking and quivering, this feeling uncharted
I want to go home, I don't want to be here
How did this become my life and my career

Next thing I know I hear no more
A bomb just exploded near a door
With darkness all around and my screaming abundant
Abruptly I awoke and once again stagnant

Heart racing and my sweat galore
All I can think about is how I want it no more
As I become calm I see my wife crying
So I hold her close and tell her I am trying

Fighting for my country and our freedom has a price
But at least we live free; therefore I must sacrifice
Keep the soldiers, marines, airmen, and sailors in your prayers
For we have chosen to support and defend and live with these fears

This is dedicated to all those soldiers, marines, airmen, and sailors risking their lives to protect our U.S. freedoms. Also, I want to dedicate this to all the spouses and loved ones for standing behind us when we need you most. I love you Amy.
