A Soldier's Wife

Pikie Melago
As daytime turns to nighttime-
I sit and wonder why,
Life has finally come to this-
And why I want to die.

It wasn't very long ago-
My life was light and gay-
And then in just a moment-
It all was stripped away.

My love, my life was sent to fight-
In Iraq's deadly war-
In just four months defending freedom-
He lives and breathes no more.

My unborn child will never meet-
Her brave and loving dad-
She'll know him just from pictures-
And stories, good and bad.

I know in time I'll live again-
And heal the pain inside-
But until then I've made a choice-
To live as though I've died.
