A Sonnet: The Black Bell

Thomas Griffin
"The Black Bell" - in Shakespearean form and iambic pentameter

Twas but a crisp and misinformed day
Only the pines could wisp their woeful song
Whence you did come inviting but a stay
Whence you did come but you did not belong
To shame with this heartfelt pain and disgrace
When beauty for ashes would never come
Shift all my burdens to you in this place
As you walk out the door back to your "home"
Oh the sorrow unfolding into grey
The black bell tolled that harsh December day
