A Son's Lament for His Dying Father

Shaheen Darr
I was born never to be accepted
Never good enough for you
Your ideals too lofty for a kid like me
I would climb, and then fall right down again
Years went by, many a climb attempted
A boy's yearning for some fatherly love
Hoping for a hug, maybe a smile?
And now it is your time to go
And as I sit by your bedside
Holding on to your wrinkled old hand
Your parting words shake my very core
I love you, my son, always have, always will
My eyes flooded with unshed tears
Regret that these words of love came so late
I hear myself whisper, my voice choked with emotion
Dad, I love you too, always have, always will
I squeeze your limp hand in mine
As I feel the tears finally drop down my cheeks
