A Soundtrack for Your Road Trip

A Top 10 List of Alt. Rock & IndieRock Songs for a Long Road Trip

Aaron M
I grew up in upstate NY, and opted to go to a college out in Midwest Ohio. My total trip from school to home was 11 hours. I used to drive it straight through, stopping only for gas, twice (and picking up some Amp'd, the best energy drink ever made in my opinion). How did I do it? Well, I would stock my car up with three Amp'd energy drinks, a box of donut holes, regularly rolled the windows down to keep the fresh, cold, night air in my face, but ultimately what made the road trip bearable, and often quite enjoyable, was the relationship I had to the soundtracks I made to get me from point A to point B.
In 11 hours, you listen to more than 10 songs. However, these top 10 were staples of mine then, and staples of mine today when I hit the road. I hope you enjoy this soundtrack to your road trip.

(An Imix with all of these songs to preview on Itunes will be available soon!) Stay tuned!

1. Modest Mouse - Float On - This classic indie rock tune will get you movin' from the very start of your trip. It has the perfect tempo and melody to start your road trip off right.

2. U2 - Vertigo - You can substitute your favorite U2 song in here, however, Vertigo gives you a lift and some catchy lyrics that you will soon find yourself singing to (especially your second time through this playlist).

3. OneRepublic - All The Right Moves - A recent addition to my top 10 road trip list, this song has all the necessary components for a good road song. It's unique, it's catchy, and ultimately you can sing along to it!

4. Augustana - Boston - This is a slower, more mellow song but it moves you. You won't be falling asleep to this song, and you may just find yourself hitting the back button to listen to it twice in a row.

5. Joseph Arthur - In the Sun - This indie rock love song will stir you up a bit. By the time the CD ends and you start over from track one, you will be anticipating listening to this song again.

6. The Classic Crime - The Way That You Are - You should just get The Classic Crime: The Silver Cord CD. That in itself is an awesome soundtrack for driving. The lyrics and music are so rhythmic, and yet are so catchy and melodic. If there is an "anthem track" on this Top 10, this song is it.

7. Anberlin - The Feel Good Drag - It's time to pick things back up again. This Feel Good Drag delivers just that. A fair warning to those who may purchase this song. They have a variation of their "Feel Good Drag" on most of their CD's. The version I am referring to is on the album "Never Take Friendships Personal".

8. House of Heroes - Code Name: Raven - This is the most unique and fresh track on this list. Let yourself listen to it three times, and it will grow on you. I promise. Their whole CD, " The End is not The End" are stories from WWII, and this song is written in that framework.

9. Lovedrug - Ghost By Your Side - This song is off of their sophomore album, Everything Starts Where It Ends. It's catchy and addicting, and like most of these songs, you'll find yourself singing along when you've listened to it a few times.

10. This Day and Age - A New Focus - This band has broken up, but their CD "Always Leave the Ground" was my soundtrack for my many road trips. You can still find it on Amazon. These indie rockers kept things fresh and simple, yet their music is so addicting!

I hope you enjoy these artists as much as I have. Be safe out there!

Loving your #7 choice -- Amberlin! (or is it Anberlin?) Now I'm second guessing myself. Ha ha. :)
