A New Start

Debi Rideout
Every December I start thinking about the ending of the year, and the beginning of a new one. Many people start to think about making New Year resolutions. I am no exception. Every year I try to come up with at least a handful of things that I would like to change about myself. Every year by the beginning of February, those resolutions are long forgotten. Therefore, this year I have decided to do things differently.

I have decided to make only one resolution. It is a resolution that I know that I will be able to stick too. My resolution is to accept myself for whom I am, and to love what is ultimately unique about me. My resolutions in the past have always been about what is wrong with me. This year I am only going to dwell on what is wonderful about me.

Honestly, why do we all make resolutions? I mean I understand that it is something that we do as far as a tradition, but is it really a good tradition? Why can't we end the year on a good note, instead of looking at how we need to improve ourselves? Why do we not look back on the year that we had, and congratulate ourselves on a job well done? I would rather tell myself that I am doing a fabulous job on being who I am than looking at the negative. Think about it. So many people start off the New Year stressed out about old habits that they just could not break. Instead of just enjoying the start of the year, they are torturing themselves to try to be perfect. Then if they fail, the start of the year is not such a happy one.

That is just not going to be me anymore. I am just going to accept that the person that I am is good enough. I am not going to try to change anything about myself. The best gift that I can give to myself is to just simply love myself. I love the woman that I am. I love the wife that I am. I love the mother that I am. I love the friend that I am. I do not want to change any of those things. Why would I want to?

Therefore, this is going to be my new start this upcoming year. This is going to be my new resolution. My new resolution is to not make any resolutions. Therefore, when I am asked this year what my New Year's resolution is, I will secretly smile to myself. Then I will say, I am not making any resolutions this year because I am perfect just the way I am. It is a new start to a new year.
