A Sticky Situation

Skunk Sticks Head in Peanut Butter Jar, Gets a Little Help

Michele Starkey
We have noticed a lot of tiny holes in the yard lately and some clumps of misplaced grass. My husband and I know who is responsible for these holes and grass disruption. The skunks have emerged from their winter dens and they are searching for grubs. The long winter months have left their bellies grumbling.

You can usually smell them long before you even see them. Every spring, their scent fills the air and my husband always jokes that it must be springtime because of the 'smell' in the air - the familiar musky smell! The skunks have returned.

In Grand Junction, Colorado recently, wildlife officers took a call from a homeowner that reported a skunk was disoriented on the homeowner's front yard and needed to be rescued. The rescue involved getting a peanut butter jar off of a skunk's head! What a sticky situation! Apparently the skunk was routing around in the trash and found the peanut butter jar and stuck its head inside. Imagine that!

The wildlife officer pried the jar from the skunk's head and the grateful skunk ran away without spraying anyone. The sticky situation never turned stinky, thankfully!

Have you ever been stuck in a sticky situation? We all need a little help every now and again. Many times in my adult life I have been 'stuck' in a sticky situation and a Good Samaritan came to my rescue.

So, just what is the lesson here - because I believe there is a lesson to be learned in every situation. The lesson is: Don't spray when you're rescued or in other words, walk away quietly and be thankful for the help. It works for the skunks and it can work for us, too.

Another lesson could be "Don't go sticking your head where it doesn't belong!"

The old saying, "One man's trash is another's treasure" also comes to mind.

I'm not eating anyone's peanut butter without a side of jelly though!

We don't have skunks in our yard. Just squirrels and rabbits and some moles underground...probably some snakes, too, but they leave me alone, thank goodness.

I've been watching the squirrels the past week and they're nuts! Rollng around, hanging upside down from the trees, digging holes and laying in them .... it's insane.
