A Stressful Day: Life Can Be so Absurd

L
As Mike drove to the local district court, all he could think about had to do with work. The fact that he might possibly lose his license made his head ache. However, he didn't have to worry about the fines, just as long as he had his job. After two hours of anxious waiting and a $550.00 fine (a week's worth of pay) he looked to his watch and realized how the time had flown by. Now he needed to rush to his job as a chef, only a couple of miles away.

He popped his head into the roaring kitchen, remembering that this day carried more importance than his own birthday. Named "The Tasting", the executives of the corporation he works for sit down and do nothing but examine and criticize the meals that he has spent hours preparing. On a day like this, he had to make sure every carrot and parsley leaf was in its place. With ten minutes until sit-down, the chances of success did not even exist at that point.

"Michael! Where the hell have you been!?" The voice exploded out of nowhere. Chef Bill would scare the pants off anyone. Colossal in build, he never let anyone get away with lollygagging. "You're lucky Smitty came in today." Eventually, Mike got his second sentence of the day- two weeks suspension from the one thing that kept him living- his cooking.

"Now what? What am I going to tell my girlfriend? My mom! How can I pay my bills?" His mind filled up with so many feelings at once. He thought his head might burst. The frustration and confusion ended in a bang, all right- literally. The old lady in the BMW too, which he rear-ended would contribute to the chain of lectures he had encountered that day.

On his way to his apartment, Mike received a phone call. On the other line yapped his upbeat mother. She seemed ecstatic. Before Mike could even break the bad news to her about all that had happened, (and what he might have needed from her) she said, "Baby, I won. I hit the big one! I won!" Mike knew that could only mean one thing- the lottery. This poor woman had tried for years upon years. "You're getting half...1.5 million dollars!" Suddenly, all the thoughts and feelings he had that day transformed into one thought, "life is so absurd".
