A Style of Her Own: A Daughter's First Haircut

Little girls everywhere love the idea of getting a new hair style. Yet, moms and dads always seem to put it off because they love their daughters beautiful long hair. Regardless of the pain and torture each morning as you try to prepare her for school, you ignore her constant pleas for a hair cut. Not a good idea!

About six months ago, my shy three year old daughter started asking to get her hair cut. My husband and I just loved her perfect long golden hair and just couldn't bear the though of cutting it off. So we kept putting off the constant request for a cut. She seemed fine with it (or so we thought) so, we just put it in the back of our minds and went about our daily lives.

Then one day about a month or so ago, I was hard at work in my home office, when I heard my older daughter call for me. I ran up the stairs to see what the problem was and found my three year old with a pair of safety scissors held up next to her head. More than three inches of hair was missing from the front and she had another handful ready to chop. She had decided she was sick of waiting for us to take her for a hair cut and took matters into her own hands.

Needless to say, she got the hair cut she was dreaming of. She now sports a short bob and a whole new personality! My once shy and anxious baby, blossomed into a vibrant, outgoing child in just a matter of minutes.

My husband and I have guessed the personality change stems from the classic second child syndrome of feeling like "second best". Her older sister has long hair that she practically sits on and people are forever commenting on it. We truly feel that allowing her to have her hair different than her sisters has made her feel more like her own person and less like competing for "first place".

So, what I'm saying is, let her get that hair cut. Don't force her to wear her hair the way you think is best. She is her own person and she deserves to have her own style (within reason). A simple hair cut may not seem like much to you, but it could change her whole outlook on life!
