A Successful Search for Public Domain Works

Keith Dailey
Today's world relies mostly on the World Web for quick access to information. After all, who wants to traipse from one library to another; or from one shop to another-in search of relevant books? Downloading is so much simpler! What people do not realize is that knowledge can be easily obtained from all the above-mentioned sources. So, why not balance libraries, book stores, and the Internet-and you have all the information you want at your fingertips!

Use these handy suggestions to access public domain works-

(1) The Internet bug has bitten local libraries too! Otherwise, why would they launch online portals? So, sit in the comfort of your drawing room and browse to your heart's content! Find the relevant titles and authors of books on the Net first, and then get them from the library of your choice. Thus, online sites offer old books, recent publications, and marvelous public domain resources!

(2) Again, the Net provides something called niche directories that hand out only niche-specific information. But there is a snag here; the search engine may provide more complete information than a niche directory. As a result, if you are not careful in your search, you may actually be missing out on quite a bit of good public domain works.

(3) Search engines like Google, no doubt, can provide a large amount of material, but unfortunately the information is not placed in a very organized way. And this can lead to confusion. It is not their fault; the World Web is such a huge place, reaching out to all corners of the globe. So only if you are very skilled and know how to apply a method to searching, will you succeed in getting the information that you want. That is why a wise searcher will use the search engine, but not rely completely on it-he/she will use other sources too. After all, a search engine can only indicate the direction in which you should go to get hold of public domain repositories, but not exactly pinpoint to something specific.

(4) Finally, there are plenty of government websites on the Internet. Government publications are spread all over the World Web! So if they are the resource you need for your public domain works, well then, set aside a few hours for browsing! Ask yourself-"Do you need to use this information as part of a service that you wish to provide?" Do you want to use it as content for your website"? Either way, you must visit some government websites!

Thus, depending on the type of information you want, these resources can yield very fruitful results. You could try just one of them, or use all, as per your convenience!
