A 'Sunny' Week on 'The Biggest Loser'

COMMENTARY | In previous weeks of "The Biggest Loser," I've had a some trouble rooting for the black team because of their consistent stronghold in the competition. I tend to root for underdogs and I get bored when the same people win every week.

Yet this week, the black team was in the surprising and refreshing position of having to struggle.

The first challenge was reminiscent of Plinko from "The Price is Right." Each contestant put their name in one of the slots on a gigantic wall and watched as they waited for the chip to land in one of the slots. The winner would receive immunity and a one-week visit home accompanied by the trainer.

Sunny was excited to win a trip back to her hometown of Frisco, Texas, but there was one catch: only her weight would count for the entire team this week.

We finally started to see some cracks in the black team's armor. John couldn't handle the fact that his fate rested in Sunny's hands. And while Antone and Joe were fast friends, Jennifer felt like an outsider.

The blue team had a surprisingly strong showing this week. Last week, I thought Bonnie made a foolish decision to eliminate Coach Mike, but somehow the seniors managed to squeak by for another week.

The red team had an up and down week. The youngsters won their first challenge by filling a cylinder full of orange soda. As a result, they had the opportunity to invite a loved one to the Biggest Loser ranch.

The red team was hopeful that they could win this week's weigh-in, especially given that they perceived Sunny as the weakest member of the black team. What they didn't know was that Sunny was getting a brutal Texas-style workout.

Sunny did manage to squeeze in a little fun, making Bob ride a mechanical bull. Yet most of the week was blood, sweat, and tears as she moved trucks, carried heavy bags of feed, and rolled stacks of hay in 110-degree heat.

A few 20-something girls cruelly poked fun of Sunny at the gym. I was glad that they showed this because it reminded viewers of the struggles she had to overcome in the real world. Sunny had the last laugh at the final weigh-in because she lost a whopping 14 pounds in one week.

This left the red team in the position of having to vote off one of their own. Given that nobody had the heart to vote out Ramon or Vinny, Courtney didn't stand a chance.

I do think the red team will bounce back from this. Jessica is a consistently strong player while Vinny showed tremendous mental breakthroughs this week. As for the black team, I could see some infighting taking place very soon. When that happens, Jennifer will be an easy target for elimination.
