A Supernatural Effort

Carleen Phillips

A fandom without controversy is a dead fandom. Controversy is needed to provide discussion, to make a show thrive. And in the Supernatural fandom? Well, since there are no females to pick on this time around, why not pick on the main characters. Yet with the not-so-friendly banter and arguments going on, it makes one wonder what show the fans are watching. Comments are filled with bashing, and the self-serving attitudes and threats that makes internet fandom such a joy to be around. "Don't confuse me with facts, my mind's already made up!" Where is the intelligent debate? Lost in the flames, my boy. Lost in the flames.

Listen to me. It's everyone's fault.

You know the story. You know what happened in the season four finale. But see, the steps taken towards this goal were so intricately planned. Sam had to play his pivotal role. Dean had to play his pivotal role. The angels played their own roles, as did the demons, and Lilith, and Ruby. Bobby played his role. John. Mary. All of them. So why are we pinning the blame solely on Sam, or Dean?

What it appears to boil down to is, which is your favorite brother, and are you going to stick by him? As human nature repeatedly dictates, the best way to build someone up is to tear the other down. What a useless sea-saw. It's a good thing the apocalypse isn't really happening, and that it doesn't depend on these two guys to stop it, because their back-ups would be at each other's throats, each deeming the other "unworthy". What is surprising, are the number of fans that act like they didn't see this divide coming. Even Kripke himself said the brothers would be at odds, that the fandom would split, and gosh darn it, he was right! But instead of the fans patting each other on the backs and consoling each other in their time of need, they're tearing into each other. Seems to be the order of the day. Viva la fans. Apocalypse Now, Redux.

The writers have done their jobs well. Fans can channel their outrage into what the characters have to be feeling at this moment. Things such as a lack of trust. Or anger. Helplessness. They are trapped within the fact that they have no control over what happens next, that many external factors are at play. Oh, fans know all about that one, having to sit back and be emotionally manipulated. The writers wanted to touch that deep-seeded, emotional core, and man did they ever.

So what now? Well, some fans talk of bailing on the show. Sure. It makes sense, you know, if the very first episode of the season didn't hit all your buttons and completely knock your socks off. It would make more sense to stick it out and finish the journey. There's a Hail Mary waiting, and I'm not talking about The Mama. Then again, with the writer's redundant habit of resurrecting the dead, who knows? That should be reassuring to fans, at any rate, the fact that they can bring something back to life, given the chance.

If the writing and the characters are making fans sincerely feel something, then that means they're doing their job, and doing it well. But acting in response to these feelings, that's all on the individual. Messages are not just words on a screen. Living, breathing, feeling flesh and blood lies behind each statement. It seems ironic to complain about the brothers not forgiving each other as the fandom itself burns with rage and misunderstanding.

Find a group of like-minded individuals, and strap yourself in. There's a hell of a ride coming up.

Instead of discontinuing your watching of SUPERNATURAL, why didn't you just stay out of fandom? I wouldn't let fandom keep me away from a show I genuinely cared for. I didn't enter online SUPERNATURAL fandom until after watching "Born Under a Bad Sign," which was late in the second season. Once I noticed any negativity, I said, "Anything that stops being fun, I exit." And so I have--lists that upset me, sites that annoy me, people who anger me. I love the show, but only participate in things connected to it that make and keep me happy.

......... To make things worse, I have the feeling that most people that love Sam, don't love him because he is nice and sensitive, they love him because they share with Sam, the experience of having something inside them (an illness, for example) that makes them different and object of some sort of rejection; so they perceive Sam's struggle to survive in the show, and eventually to be listened and understood, as their own struggle to make society understand them.

The problem is not sam girls vs dean girls, it is sam girls vs Kripke's decision to show just one side of the story. Even an idiot knows every story has two sides, and Kripke's decision to hide Sam's mindset to make him unsympathetic and to continuously show Dean's POV to justify all his actions, is perceived by one part of the fandom, as the ultimate proof of Kripke's BETRAYAL.

Why? Because two different groups of fans bought the show about two brothers that Kripke offered them four years ago, both groups of fans did a lot to promote the show, and once the show got some sort of recognition, Kripke chose one group of fans and ignored the other one.

Two things - 1 - at least this show HAS devoted fans who are interested enough to watch and comment and whatnot on it and 2 - I am so impressed that you know exactly how ALL fans think! (sarcasm). What you see and hear most of course are the more crazy ones, but some of us just happen to enjoy a show that is generally well written, has a different take on the genre and two leads who can actually act. So much better than the reality crap and vacuous fare that seems to permeate a lot of TV and CW in particular.

I stopped watching Supernatural because of its fandom.

They are extremely aggressive and they behave as if they were involved in a real personal relationship with the show, its crew and actors (more than scary it is really sad).

I also dislike the lack of critical thinking among SNL fans. They don't judge facts, they don't judge messages. They accept everything, as long as the brother they like most prevails over the other brother. They don't care if they end up defending intolerant and out of date beliefs, they don't think by themselves, they just defend one brother and attack rabidly the other (and the actor that plays his role).

Maybe television´s goal is not to educate people, but last season, every time I watched SNL and spent time with the fandom, I felt as guilty as when I do something that is not good for my health.

bravo to the show - because what other show creates such socially relevant controversy? - and brava to you for hitting the nail on the head with this piece.

Yes, thank you. Constantly trying to explain that to people is exhausing, lol. Well said.

That's what this show does, it gets the fans riled up and upset and emotional and Kripke you are one evil SOB for creating such a show (I mean that with wholehearted love and respect and awe)! I love both brothers, and I tend to like to delve deeper into their feelings and what they both need to do to mend and forgive and hopefully build a new and much stronger relationship. It's sad to see the fandom so split, I mean we are supposed to be on the WINCHESTERS' sides, let the rest be damned! But now we have Sam girls vs. Dean girls to the point of actually bashing Sam to make Dean look better and bashing Dean to make Sam look better, it's really sad.

You can bet that Eric is not going to keep these boys apart for long, it's going to be a bumpy and long ride but all the angst and emotional roller-coaster is not going to be in vain (Kripke it better not be), I believe Eric is going to bring the boys back together, HELLO it's about SAM AND DEAN. They need our support, we can't side with

I love Dean and Sammy. Don't get me wrong I'm a total Dean girl, always have been always will be. But I love Sammy in a different way. My heart breaks fr both boys. The lack of trust and the broken bond that will never be the same is heartbreaking to see. But Kripke warned us and the fandom did split. But for me the heart of this show is BOTH Dean & Sam. Their love for eachother and the willingness to do anything to save the other. Yeah, right now they are in a place of no trust and of anger but that will pass and they will rebuild their brotherly bond and it will be stronger then before. Supernatural is a show about things tat go bump in the night but it's soul is the love and strength of the brothers. Every deicated fan knows that. I've been with this show since the start, it's by far the best show out there and nothing , nothing will get me to think other wise. LONG LIVE THE WINCHESTERS!!!!

I don't separate the boys, never have nor will I do it in the future. I watch the show cause I like the writing and I appreciate the effort the lead actors put in for years now. That doesn't mean I liked the plot last year and it certainly doesn't mean that I will like it this year if it stays the brothers fighting all season again.
But If I wanna call my self a fan and I do then I will stick with the show till the very last episode and I hope it takes many years to get there.
