A Taste of Beaufort, South Carolina

Abby Greenhill
Beaufort, South Carolina is a very popular tourist destination. All tourists need to eat. Beaufort has enough restaurants that you can stay a few weeks and not eat at the same one twice, unless you want to! Whether you prefer a casual and relaxing meal in town or you want to venture out to Lady's Island or St. Helena Island, there are many locations that will peak your culinary interests.

The Shrimp Shack

1925 Sea Island Parkway
St. Helena Island, South Carolina

The Shrimp Shack doesn't have a website; it's pretty much a shrimp burger and fries sort of place. It opens for lunch at 11:00 AM. There are a few outside tables and inside there are a few more. It's a small place and if you blink you might miss it. It's almost out to the beach, on the left hand side, so if you hit the Hunting Island Park for the day, stop for a shrimp burger. These are not for the faint of heart, they are large and they are deep fried. You might want to skip the fries! A shrimp burger will run you a little less than $7.00.

Barbara Jean's Restaurant (Lady's Island)

47 Ferry Road, Beaufort, SC 29907
(843) 524-2400

Open Sunday to Thursday from 11 am-9 pm, Friday and Saturday, 11 am-9:30 pm and they have breakfast on weekends & holidays, 8 am-11 am.

Barbara Jean's is a small chain with coastal locations in South Carolina, Georgia and Florida. Barbara Jean's began in St. Simons, Georgia and yes, there truly is a Barbara Jean. It was her dream and her recipes and you can find her at different Barbara Jean locations on different days. Barbara Jean, along with other family members, keep their fingers in the pie so to speak!

No matter what day you visit Barbara Jean's in Beaufort, South Carolina it will be a good day for you. If you ask anyone in Beaufort where to go for the best she-crab soup, Barbara Jean's will be the name you hear. I think it's a law that you need to have at least one bowl of she-crab soup while you are in Beaufort. Once you have your soup you can move on to Barbara Jeans other delicious dishes such as crab cakes, or grilled salmon.

I recommend the she crab soup; it has its own unique flavor. Of course you can get a steak, pot roast or even a turkey dinner at Barbara Jean's if you aren't into seafood. To top off your dinner, ask for the bread pudding, it's the perfect way to end a perfect meal. Try Barbara Jean's once and you will be hooked! For more information on she-crab soup - click here.

Another fantastic seafood restaurant is called Dockside, which is located at 1699 11th Street, Port Royal, South Carolina. It is about a 10 minute ride from downtown Beaufort. To read more about the Dockside - click here.

For candy or your daily chocolate fix, be sure to visit The Chocolate Tree at 507 Carteret Street, and that is in downtown Beaufort. If you love chocolate - click here for more information about The Chocolate Tree.

Bagel lovers head on over to The Palm and Moon Bagel Company, one block off of Bay Street - click here for more information.

Have a great shrimp burger lunch at the Shrimp Shack, a delicious seafood dinner at Barbara Jean's one night and Dockside another night. Start your day with a fresh New York style bagel from The Palm and Moon. Be sure to take home a box of candy from The Chocolate Tree as a sweet memory of your trip to Beaufort, South Carolina.

I lived 3 tours of military life in the area of Beaufort, South Carolina. Parris Island, Beaufort-Port Royal. Little over eight years all together--in fact all of my children, which I have three, were born at the Naval Hospital. I must ssy I have had my share of seafood there. Mostly, freshly caught. My ex loved to fish and shrimp. It been many years now. Kids are all grown but I would love to visit the area again. I think it is a beautiful area.
