A Technological Mommy

It's 3:00 A.M. and I'm rudely awakened by the vibration of my blackberry against my nightstand. I grab it quickly and press any key my fingers can land on before it starts beeping. My husband glares at me and voices his opinion on how much he hates my phone. I read the new e-mail message only to find out it's a stupid spam mail that has slipped through the spam filter. I get a drink of water and head back to bed.

In the morning, I check my e-mail messages right away just in case I wasn't awakened during the night and missed an important message from the office or from anyone else that was crazy enough to send a message while I was sleeping but I see nothing. As I get ready for work I remember the lunch meeting I have at noon with an old friend. I shoot her a quick text message to confirm.

I grab my purse, my company blackberry phone, laptop and my personal flip phone. My daughter is ready and as we walk out the door I realize that her cell phone is on the table so I run back and stuff it in her backpack. She is one of the few 1st graders with a cell phone but the thought of me not being able to communicate with her in an emergency overwhelms me. It may be the fact that I'm so used to having technology around me that I have to feel connected with everyone at all times. When I get into my car my blackberry vibrates anouncing yet another e-mail. As I read the latest memo from the office, my husband calls to tell me he'll be able to pick up my daughter from school.

While waiting for my coffee at Starbucks, I bring out my laptop and try to start working on the reports that should have been turned in yesterday. As my coffee is ready and I pick it up, I realize I have a few more minutes left before I have to pack up and drive again so I shoot a few more e-mails while sipping my scalding coffee. What would I do without all my technology?

It seems like I'm addicted to all my my gadgets but reality is, I use each and every one of them on a daily basis. They keep me connected to everything and everyone. Let's face it, in these modern times, there is rarely anyone I know who doesn't own a cell phone.

I'm sure my daughter will be less than pleased knowing that I am savvy on MySpace and all of the other social networking sites. She better get used to it though because I will be eyeing her under the microscope while she's online.

Schools are getting children more involved with technology as well. Just the other day, I received a letter and an invitation to attend my daughter's
Power Point presentation on reptiles. Power Point for a 1st grader! I think it's fantastic.

When it comes to my blackberry, well it is strictly for my job so while I can't make any personal calls with it, I am free to use the map feature that helps me get around the city and find addresses quickly.

My lap top is just like my partner in crime. I am able to finish reports on time because I can carry it around at all times. I can even skip a report writing night and go to the movies. While I wait for the feature, I am busy typing away. Not only there, but when I take my daughter to the park, I can work while she plays.

And let's not even get started on the internet... I use that for basically any question I may have from what that weird rash on my child's face is to where they serve excelent sushi for lunch. I can even pay all of my bills in about 3 minutes with my online bill pay. I can't imagine writing checks out for the 15 bills I have to pay every month. In this fast paced world technology is not a luxury but a necessity, at least in my eyes.
