A Tour of Haunted Colleges and Universities in Indiana

When it comes to haunted colleges and universities, you should look to Indiana for the best stories. There are well known schools like Indiana University, but there are just as many smaller schools that you may have never heard about before.

First is the Tri-State University in Angola, serving students in Michigan, Indiana and Ohio. This school has the haunted Sigma Phi Epsilon House. One of the former sorority members died in the building during the 1980s or 1990s and isn't ready to move on yet.

If you're in the Donaldson area you should look for the Ancilla College and Convent. Tunnels that run under the school seem to be particularly haunted as many students have spotted the ghosts of two Catholic nuns walking. When approached, the ghosts vanish. Others have heard things moving in the tunnels and felt someone touching them. Buildings on campus have strange occurrences too such as doors and windows closing or opening on their own.

Fort Wayne is home to the haunted library at the University of Saint Francis. A student killed himself in the library and has been spotted there ever since. There are also stories of cold spots, strange noises and things moving on their own. DePauw University is Greencastle is so haunted that security guards have refused to work there alone after dark.

Franklin College in Franklin, Indiana has the haunted Old Main building. A fire during the 1980s ruined a good portion of the building and killed a student in the attic. There are many students who have heard someone screaming in the attic, at the same time the fire broke out. At times the school has cancelled classes in the building because students and professors complained about the horrifying smell or burning flesh.

There's also the Bishop Noll Institute in Hammond. Two students of the school have died over the years as well as a janitor who committed suicide there. One of the students drowned in the pool and though it's no longer used, people often hear someone laughing there. There are also stories of cold spots, things moving and footsteps heard when the halls are empty.

Indiana's Hanover College has two haunted buildings: Parker Auditorium and the Donner Residence Hall. The Parker Auditorium is haunted by its namesake, AG Parker. People claim to see the man's ghost, hear someone walking around and have things disappear mysteriously. The Donner Residence Hall is haunted by the ghost of a female resident who killed herself. Students living there sometimes have personal things mysteriously taken.

The Physical Education Recreation Center at Huntington College is haunted by a mysterious woman. This ghost is always seen in a white dress and only makes herself known to the males in the building. She also frequents the men's restrooms where she likes to play with the toilets and showers, even when people are inside.

Oakland City College has the haunted Cockram Hall. Colonel William Cockram founded the college and for some unknown reason his wife killed herself in the tower on campus. Students report seeing a mysterious orange light glowing in the tower and seeing the doors close or open on their own.

In Renesselaer, Indiana you'll find several haunted buildings on the St. Joseph College Campus. Aquinas Hall is no longer used, but students claim that years ago priests on campus performed an exorcism there. Maybe that spirit went over to Drexel Hall where people claim to hear voices talking in their heads when they enter.

Dwenger Hall at St. Joseph is also haunted and closed down. People on campus have seen lights on inside the building, even though it's not in use. Students claim that years ago a student had a baby in Hallas Hall. Though the child died, people claim to hear the sounds of a baby crying. Lastly on this haunted campus is the theater. Stories say that a priest was distraught after trying to exorcise a student and failed so he killed himself in the theater. Now he plays with the doors and touches students trying to work on the catwalk.

You also have the haunted Earlham College in Richmond, Indiana. During the 1850s two students fell into the creek behind campus and died. Students now claim that if you go near the creek on Halloween night, you can hear the sounds of the two students crying and falling into the creek.

Terre Haute has two haunted college campus: Indiana State University and St. Mary of the Woods College. Indiana State University's Cromwell Hall is haunted by the ghost of a man who jumped out of the window. There are stories of people hearing the man walking around or talking and seeing a glowing white cross near the window where he jumped. Bruford Hall's ghost is Barb who lived there and died when she drank too much one night. People claim to hear the woman crying and getting sick in the bathroom as well as hearing her move through the halls.

The theater on the St. Mary of the Woods College is haunted by two ghosts. Students have seen the ghost of a nun inside the theater and heard another ghost on the stairs. Another nun who committed suicide in O'Shaughnessy Hall makes her presence known by leaving behind a peculiar bloodstain on the spot where she killed herself.

Valparaiso has the haunted Alumni Hall on the Valpo University campus. Many students and alumni have seen the ghosts of two kids playing in the hallway late at night. Last is the Sigma Pi House in Vincennes where people see the ghost of a Civil War soldier who once lived there.

If you're thinking about attending college in Indiana, maybe you should give one of their haunted universities a try!
