A Tour of Haunted Hospitals in Indiana

Jennifer Eblin
Indiana has a number of haunted spots, but every year around Halloween people start looking for haunted hospitals. Part of that is because of the old urban legend of a haunted hospital, but there are just as many people hoping to see some real life ghosts.

In Bass Lake, Indiana there are the remains of an old haunted hospital. Today there's nothing left except for the basement and some of the foundation, but that hasn't stopped the stories. Supposedly people have heard odd noises coming from the basement area and seen dark shadows. Rumors say that one of the former janitors died at the hospital and now haunts it.

The Evansville Life Center is equally haunted. The site was once a Catholic Church and cemetery, but the bodies were moved in the 1980s. There are stories that the ghosts of former nuns still roam the halls and have since their bodies were moved. Some claim to feel someone watching them or hearing footsteps late at night.

Evansville also has a haunted tuberculosis hospital, better known as the Boehne Camp Hospital. There are stories about people seeing the ghosts of patients roaming the property and hearing strange noises. Supposedly the patients hated their time at the hospital so much that they could never move on with their lives.

In Fort Wayne, Indiana you'll find the story of the Byron Health Care Center and the Stairway to Hell. The building no longer exists, but locals still remember the stories. Supposedly there was once a stairway inside that had no end. People claimed that the darkness felt heavy and oppressive and that the lights from their flashlights just bounced around in the darkness.

Fort Wayne had another haunted hospital that was torn down, the Lutheran Hospital. According to legend a former patient died in the building during the 1950s and never left. When the hospital was in operation, a number of people spotted his ghost roaming through the halls including patients and staff.

The Old Central State Hospital and Asylum is not only one of the most haunted places in Indianapolis, but in all of Indiana. There are many stories of people seeing dark shadows and people wandering around late at night. In addition people working there have heard someone screaming or moaning in pain.

Lapote, Indiana has several haunted hospital type places. The first is the 10th Street Clinic. Supposedly a Native American woman died there when the Trail of Tears passed through. Now people claim that things move, doors are locked from the inside and someone makes the elevator move. There's also the Fountainview Terrace Nursing & Rehabilitation Building. This building is supposedly on the site of an old Indian burial ground. Last is the Laporte Medical Building where the ghost of an Indian still walk. Legend claims it was built on top of a burial ground.

Linton is another Indiana town where a haunted hospital was torn down. The Old Greene County Hospital was a spot where people claimed to feel someone watching them and hear people talking or walking around when no one was there. Not there's a new Wendy's restaurant on the former site of the hospital.

If you're afraid of dentists, you might want to stay away from the haunted dentist's office in Peru, Indiana. Back when the building was used as a house, a woman died there. Staff and patients now claim to hear and see strange things. Some in the neighborhood have also spotted a woman looking out the window when the building's closed for the night.

Of course there are also haunted nursing homes in Indiana such as the Ben Hur Nursing Home in Crawfordsville. This nursing home has two resident ghosts. One is that of a former nurse who's sometimes spotted roaming the halls. The other ghost is a younger person who's a harbinger of death. Anytime this child is spotted, the patient dies.

The Hanover Nursing Home in Hanover, Indiana is also haunted. People living or working there sometimes hear the sounds of someone playing the piano, though no one is ever around at the time.

Another haunted nursing home is the Pythian Home in Lafayette, Indiana. This one is believed to be haunted by the ghost of former patients who died there over the years. There is also a story of a young girl being murdered in one of the bathrooms. People claim to see someone in the hall, feel someone touch them and hear people walking around. The bathroom where the girl was murdered supposedly has bloodstains that return every year on the anniversary of her death.

Versailles has the haunted Silver Bell Nursing Home. People inside claim to hear kids running around or someone whistling in the hallway. There are also stories of people getting locked in rooms and lights that come on without anyone touching them.

Funeral homes are equally haunted such as the Old Jacob's Funeral Home in Kokomo, Indiana. The building is no longer used as a funeral home, but people think the ghosts are from that time period. There are stories of people seeing a ghostly light inside and smelling something akin to human flesh.

Columbia City also has a haunted funeral home and this one was once owned by a hospital. There are stories of ghosts, electrical problems and things being moved. In addition staff of the hospital claim to feel someone watching them or having an uncomfortable feeling when left there alone at night.

With all these haunted spots in Indiana, there's no reason to look for a fake haunted hospital this Halloween.

I work at Hanover Health and Rehab (Hanover Nursing Home). There are many reports from staff about "sightings" and "sounds" in the building. Mostly concentrated around "Wing 1" which is the oldest part of the building. We also have had several residents complain about the "children" playing there when NONE are present. Some have even gone so far as to say the "children" want them to go with them.

I spent some time in Indiana, and have been to Evansville. I'm just so grateful that I wasn't visiting one of the hospitals during my time there! Great read. :)
