A New Tradition for Baby Showers: Try Throwing a Baby-Sprinkle

Mica Smith
So far it has been a little tradition among my circle of friends that whenever one of us gets pregnant well all pitch in to throw a shower. Then the issue came up of one of us is pregnant with their second child what is the proper thing to do. Everyone knows in reality the extra help is appreciated. We did a little research and came up with giving her a Baby-Sprinkle rather than a Baby-Shower.

Now normally what is given at these types of shower is simple things like diapers, wipes, shampoo, lotion. Things that you might have been given the first time but defiantly need again. Now in this case, she is having a baby of the same sex. So, we came together and decided a smaller shower or "sprinkle" shall we say would be sufficient. I do however believe that if she was having a baby of a different sex a full-blown shower should be given. Especially if the children are a number of years apart.

There are many resources for coming up with cute slogans for the invites. We simply googled baby sprinkle and hundreds of options came up. They ranged from 4 lines to whole page long poems for parents expecting their 2nd child. We also decided to go with a girly girl theme rather than the pastel pink baby color. Our colors are hot pink, lime green, yellow and bright purple. Along with those colors we are using stripes and polka dots. It all ties in together really nicely. We also were able to find blank cards, which made the invites super easy to make. The ones we found were hot pink, lime green, orange, yellow, purple. Just the colors we needed. They were cheaper because they were blank on the inside. We just decided what we were going to put on them and printed them using our home computer. One thing we did decide to do to make it easier for the invited guests was to give some examples of the types of gifts given at this parties. Usually for a smaller shower the mother will not register anywhere. And we didn't want her to end up with 40 light pink piggy banks. These parties are also meant to be on the smaller side. However, if you know you are the only one giving your friend this shower be prepared for a slightly larger number.

Another way I saved money for this smaller shower was making the centerpieces myself. I purchased three hot pink small party bags and three lime green party bags. Got hot pink and lime green tissue paper to alternate with the bags. To decorate I printed off the baby's name in lime green and hot pink along with a flower clip art and printed it out and glued it directly on the baby and I was done. I happen to have a few embellishments from my scrap booking pile but they aren't needed if you don't have them. When I was done I used hot pink, lime green, and yellow balloons tied them to the bags and placed a rock inside the bag to keep it on the table and I was done. I spent a total of 4.00 due to 2.00 for the bags (they were in a set) and 2.00 for the tissue (also in a set). When I went out looking for centerpieces the cheapest I could find was 3.99 each. I had 6 tables to decorate for that price just was not in my budget.

This type of party also differs in the alloted time given for the party to be held. Most times baby showers last awhile due to the amount of time it takes to open all those presents. In this case the mother does not open the presents. They should all be diapers, wipes, lotion etc. So that time can be shaved off when you are preparing yourself and others for the party's length of time. When it comes to food. Our motto has been, "Keep it simple". We are having cake and punch along with fruit, nuts, and mints.

In the end just remember that no matter what place in line the baby is born they are all a blessing and should be rejoiced over. Also, remember how nice it felt when you were given your shower and you didn't have to buy diapers for 5 months and what a great feeling that was. I am certain the mother will be most appreciative and thankful for friends and family that would give her this "sprinkle" to honor that baby that is such a special gift to her growing family.
