A Trip to Remember! (Or Forget)

David Miller

During the summer of 1997 my family and I went on a trip to Washington DC. I was only 11 years old and completely obsessed with politics and government. I was so excited to finally see all of the things that I had studied and read about in school such as the White House, The Capitol, and monuments. On the first day of the trip, while going through the American History Museum early in the morning, I became overly energized and began to feel sick. I remember my mom saying, "Oh no, David is going to pass out" and not a minute later I fainted in the middle of the museum. A Smithsonian medical cart was dispatched to come to my aid. They took me outside in the fresh air and there they noticed I had a red rash over my entire body. I then fainted again. The next thing I remember was waking up 13 hours later in the hotel room bed. I spent the majority of that first day sleeping instead of enjoying the sights. For the rest of the trip I tried to remain calm, so I could actually enjoy what I was so thrilled to see in the first place. What a trip.
