You got the card? Not too mushy, not too cold?
Now, look at the left panel of the card on the inside. That's a blank space in which a few fords could become a treasure
held by your Dad for the rest of his life. If you are older, like me, that time is past, unredeemed, can't be recaptured, right?
Well, maybe it can.
Take a moment, just a second or two. What is the first great memory that pops up of something, some time that you and your Dad had together. The one time that on reflection, you felt the most positive about; the one thing that you did that really made your feelings for your Dad worth everything.
Was it the time you went together to get Mom a present for Mother's day or a card that he helped you pick out? Did you go for a walk that turned into learning something about Dad that you never suspected?
A personal trip, maybe just to the store, where you and Dad and that particular experience that you shared was more important than anything?
He wasn't infallible, he was human.
If we look there is always at least one thing that stands out in our memory of Dad that makes us smile, or laugh, or grimace, or whatever.
But, it's the one thing that you could put into a few words that shows that there was at least one time when he was Dad; you were his child, you looked up to him, admired him, respected him, wanted him to appreciate you the way you did him, that one time above all the others.
Now, write that memory in that blank space.
"Dad? Remember when we...?"
Oh, and above I said that we could still send it to them, even if they weren't around? Just address it and mail it to Dad, in care of you.
When it comes in the mail, open and read with a loving eye.
