A Twist on Traditional Turkey: Barbecue and Coca-Cola Turkey Recipes

A.L.C.
Sometimes it is nice to eat turkey prepared in a different way than the traditional baked bird and stuffing. Every once in a while it is fun to try this traditional meal with a non-traditional recipe. It is fun for the entire family to enjoy a repast that is colorful and tasty. It is important to please the eyes as well as the tummy. We have tried the recipes that follow and found them all to be scrumptious and found that they livened up thanksgiving and other holidays which had become a little boring with their regularity.

Barbecue Turkey;
You will need 1 whole turkey cut into the same pieces as you would a chicken.

1 cup softened butter, 1/2 cup of sugar, 3 tsp of salt, 1 cup Worcester sauce, 1 cup of honey, 1 cup of water, 2 tablespoons of minced garlic, 2 cups of ketchup, 1 large onion, chopped(preferably a Walla Walla), 1/2 cup of vinegar, 1 tablespoon of coarse ground black pepper(optional).

First coat the pieces with flour(sour dough recipe with buttermilk is good) and then brown them. Mix the sauce(the thickness may be varied by amount of water) and brush some on the bottom of a large metal baking pan. Next arrange the pieces of turkey in the pan and brush the sauce generously over all of them. Cover and bake at 350 degrees for approximately two hours. We add the neck and gizzards when we prepare this dish for those so inclined to eat them.

Coca-Cola Turkey;
You will need one whole turkey cut into pieces as you would a chicken.

One, 20-ounce Coca-Cola(regular not diet, not flavored), 1 cup of minced onion, 1/2 cup of brown sugar, 1 tablespoon of yellow mustard(Guldens brown mustard is also good), 1 tablespoon of garlic powder, 1 cup softened butter, 2 cups of ketchup, water(depending how thick you desire the sauce), 1 cup Westchester sauce.

Brown the pieces (skip the flour for this dish)and place them in a large deep metal baking pan. Pour the mixed sauce over the pieces making sure to coat them well. Next slowly pour the Coca-Cola in so that it doesn't wash off the barbecue sauce. Cover and bake at 350 degrees for a little less than 2 hours. Check for tenderness with fork and baste the pieces with the juices often.
