A Two Dollar Trick to Make Kids Jeans Last Longer

Double the Strength of Your Children's Jeans in Less Than 5 Minutes

S. OBrien
If you're tired of buying jeans for your kids, only to have the knees tear in less than a month, you'll love this money saving tip. You only need a couple basic supplies and a few minutes to make your child's pants last twice as long.

Materials
Jeans
Denim Patches
Iron
Ironing Board

Time: Five Minutes
Cost: Two Dollars

As soon as you purchase that next pair of jeans, make sure to stop by the craft store to pick up some denim patches. You know, those old-fashioned blue iron-on jobs that great grandma used to use. Don't worry, they won't show in the end.

Set up your ironing board and preheat your iron on the cotton setting. Be sure to turn the steam setting off. Now, turn the jeans wrong side out and iron out any wrinkles.

With the jeans still wrong side out, give the knee area another swipe with the iron. Now, place a patch on one knee, shiny side down. Rest your iron over one area of the patch for a few seconds, then move to another area and so on until the entire patch is attached. Check the edges of the patch to make sure it's secure. If not, simply apply more heat. Now repeat the process with the other knee.

Turn the jeans right side out and, voila, you're done! You've just doubled the strength of the knees in the jeans, the part that kids can really give a beating. Since the patches are on the inside, the only one that will know the difference is you - and your wallet!

  • One $2 package of patches usually contains 2 denim squares, each large enough to reinforce one knee.
  • Patches can also be used to repair small tears, and still be hidden on the inside of the pants.
