A Typical Day

John Smither
A typical day idling here in the sun

Is not all as it appears, not all barrels of fun

Mundane, boring and the incessant heat

On occasion we can do nothing, we are totally beat

Too early most mornings we awake with a start

The noise is dogs barking or buses about to depart

A truck revs its engine; oh please will he just drive

It's like this each morning as our sleep he does deprive

The internet connection this morning is slow

Yesterday it was gone completely, now that was a blow

The locals are mostly charming as we walk down the street

Most are welcoming, smile, how are you, to us they do greet

One in particular will search for us ready to say

Shilling please boss, pleading to us to pay each day

As each evening is threatening to close

With the setting sun comes a dilemma we suppose

For us to sit outside and witness the sunset

At this time as the insects have much food to get

A perfect target we would be, just sitting there waiting all white

If we ventured outside at this time of night, just call us bug bite

So far we have found two scorpions indoors, they were most impressive

But they had to go, for they were far too aggressive

One or two small lizards have wandered indoors

Scuttling very quickly across the tile floors

Our new choice of pets as you can see

Is not very conventional, but then, neither are we.

I had often felt that I had a book inside me ready to be written (many of us have I know), well it has been but now I need to get it published. Until recently I never knew I could write poems, that is my nex...  View profile

Great poem, made me smile! I don't envy you the scorpions though!

Well, it sure didn't take too long for the gorgeous new seaside habitat you & Lisa found to begin to sound a little too scary for me, John! Major earthquake, scorpions in the house, oppressive heat & being a bug feast are a little more than I could handle, even for the splendor you have access to. Little lizards would be ok. Among our 5 kids we had (besides the family dogs & a variety of fish), mice, gerbils, rats, rabbits, iguanas, snakes (big ones, even), but not all at once. Belize makes me think of the classic saying, "Nice place to visit, but I wouldn't want to live there." After all the planning & dreams of a lifestyle change, I truly hope you & Lisa find the trade off to be worth it!

Nicely written poem. It reminds me that I really do hate hot, hot, hot weather. Prefer the cool Fall.

Doesn't sound much different than life in North Carolina. LOL

Scorpions? I'd like to see 'em - from a safe distance! It's gonna be 80m degrees here today, they reckon, but not as hot as there. Just think of grim, dismal Autumn/Winter days in England, John. You've got the better deal!

Great poem about your new home! Sounds like there are many pests there...
