A Very Brief Examination of Genesis 3:15

Are You Crushing the Serpent's Head or is He Bruising Your Heel?

Jared Moore
Once again, the reason why there are needs in humanity is because we're not in the Garden of Eden anymore. Sin is the reason. However, Christians have been freed from the dominion of sin. Though this has not been fully realized due to our sinful flesh, Christ has freed us from the penalty of sin, is freeing us from the power of sin, and will surely free us from the presence of sin. Out of gratitude for all Jesus has given us, we must rise up seeking to crush the head of the Serpent (Gen. 3:15).

As the church, given the privilege of continuing the ministry of Christ on earth as His body, we must serve a lost and dying world. We mustn't serve so they'll listen to us, but so that we will be meeting the needs they have because of the Serpent. Our motivation must be God's glory alone. If He is our motivation, and He is unchanging, then serving won't be a matter of our feelings, their response, our situation, etc. but it will be because He prophesied concerning the Serpent's destruction and the "sons and daughters of God" participating in it. This means that serving is a lifestyle; and it must become as involuntary as breathing. Even when they don't "hear" us and even when no one is listening, we still must serve! John Calvin once said that the preacher's mouth must be open even whenever his congregation's ears are closed.

Sinners must see that the church is not the enemy; and that we are the "hands and feet" of Jesus, seeking to bring them to where they long to be. Having been created for God's glory, we love them because apart from God's grace, we are them! We must view them as another avenue to bring glory to God in the crushing of Satan. We cannot continue allowing him to bruise the heel of the church as his hatred for humanity leads him to deceive as many as possible.

It's time for every member of the kingdom of God to view his or herself as either being bruised by Satan or crushing his head through evangelism for God's glory alone! Our laziness must stop, and we must get to work! We, the church, are the only evangelism strategy God has. Before the foundation of the world, He decided to set apart a people unto Himself to be used to spread His good news across all creation, calling all to repent while God the Holy Spirit saves their souls.

What an awesome privilege!
