A Very Simple and Safe Homemade Toothpaste Recipe

You can make either a toothpaste or a toothpowder.

All you need is the following ingredients. Most people will already have these in their kitchen cupboard: salt, baking soda, and a few drops of glycerin.

To make a successful homemade toothpaste you just need to mix them in the right proportions.

Take 4 teaspoons baking soda, add 1 teaspoonful of ordinary salt and you already have a workable toothpowder.

The salt you use should be well ground. You can use any culinary salt - just as long as it is sodium chloride.

Make sure that you use baking soda and not baking powder. Baking powder contains tartaric acid as well as baking soda, so the taste is rather different. Baking soda is just sodium bicarbonate. Use food grade products for all your ingredients.

To turn it into a paste just add a small spoonful of glycerin. Mix the glycerin into the powder until it is the right consistency for a toothpaste. Add a drop of mint extract if you like to flavour it. Alternatively, a little natural cinnamon powder can be used. Dried orange peel, powdered with the aid of a food processor, can also be used for flavouring.

To make larger quantities, just keep to the same proportions.

Mix the toothpaste ingredients together well and keep the mixture in an air-tight container.

This is probably as safe and effective as any homemade toothpaste recipe can be. There is no evidence that the ingredients for this toothpaste recipe causes any harm to your tooth enamel. In fact, several proprietary brand contain just these ingredients. Baking soda toothpastes were very fashionable a few years ago. Many brands still include baking soda. Weleda makes a very pleasant toothpaste made with salt and other ingredients. Both baking soda and salt are brilliant natural cleaners. Neither salt nor sodium bicarbonate is unduly abrasive used in this way.

Whether you make a toothpaste or a toothpowder with this recipe, your teeth will feel beautifully fresh and clean. It's also very cheap to make.
