A Victim of the Glass Cage

The Lone Wolf Weeps

Melissa Lawson
He looks around his cage --
his tiny prison of glass.
His tormentors come and go,
but he's not allowed to pass.
He's been here for years, pleading
to all the gods above him.
He begs for freedom, for young ones,
and for someone to love him.

But the gods have turned away,
he finds himself alone.
He's given up his crying,
his love of Life is gone.
All the good things lie beyond the cage;
inside the glass, it's cold.
He's the Lone Wolf, the Spirit of Freedom;
the Glass Cage imprisons his soul.

    Wow. This resurected that dark place in my soul. It's very painful to read, which means you have done an excellent job of communicating, Melissa.

    Gosh - this poem really makes me think about all of the people out there - the "wolves" - who appear to be so strong on the outside and yet feel so helpless and alone on the inside. I'm sure that many readers will be able to relate.
