A Visitors Guide to Bucklebury, England

Exploring the Hometown of Catherine, Duchess of Cambridge

Sandy Mitchell
The new Duchess of Cambridge grew up far away from the excesses and hectic pace of London. She hails from Bucklebury, a small town of around 2000 residents, nestled in the bucolic Berkshires region of England. Her sister, Pippa and parents still live in the area. If you'd like to walk in the footsteps of the Duchess, here's what you need to know:

How to Get to Bucklebury

Bucklebury is located about 47 miles west of London, just north of the A4 highway. Americans visiting Bucklebury should fly into London's Heathrow Airport and rent a car for the hour's drive west. A car is a necessity for exploring this region of the country.

Where to Stay in and around Bucklebury

There are no accommodations directly in Bucklebury, but you don't have to travel too far for lodging. The West Grange Hotel, a Best Western affiliate, is located less than a mile away from Bucklebury. The 64-room hotel has extensive grounds and gardens as well as a restaurant and bar. All rooms have free wireless Internet access.

A little farther away, about five miles outside of Bucklebury, is the Regency Park Hotel in Thatcham. This larger hotel also offers free wireless Internet access in all guest rooms as well as an indoor swimming pool, a fitness center and a restaurant.

Pubs and Other Attractions

Bucklebury has two pubs--the Bladebone Inn and the Cottage Inn. Catherine's favorite pub, however, is rumored to be the Old Boot Inn in the nearby town of Stanford Dingley. The area doesn't have too many shops--there's a butcher's shop and a general store.

One of the most striking attractions in Bucklebury is the Parish Church, St. Mary the Virgin, which was constructed in the late 11th century. The Norman-style church is made from chalk and flint. Still an active parish, visitors can attend services there or call ahead to tour the building.

Bucklebury Commons, a 860-acre woodland area, is privately-owned by the Bucklebury Estate, but open for the public to enjoy. Located just west of Bucklebury, the park offers hiking trails, benches and ponds.

The children in your group (and the young at heart) will love a visit to the Bucklebury Farm Park, located just west of Bucklebury. Open from early spring to late autumn, the 74-acre park features farm animals that you view up close, a deer park, an indoor play area and tractor rides.
