A Walk on the Beach

Lori Duncan
What if I told you that there is a way you can improve your quality of life, while adding years to it as well?

This therapy doesn't come in the form of a pill. It doesn't involve costly or embarrassing trips to the gym. And it's something you can do alone, with your dog, or with your whole family. Walks on the beach may help you live longer.

Let's list the benefits of a day at the beach:

The health benefits of walking alone are numerous. It's good for your heart and your lungs and it's good for your muscle tone. The resistance of the soft sand under your feet causes a natural toning effect on all parts of your legs and hips. Packed sand is the perfect surface for running and jogging. Sand is a natural exfoliant and it's free. Loofah sponges aren't. You can also use the sand and saltwater to rub on your skin for a great softening effect. If you get overheated from a brisk walk, the water is right there to cool you off. Negative ions are heavily present in large bodies of water, typically moving water such as found in oceans, rivers and waterfalls.

Positive ions rob us of our sense of well being and happy dispositions, while the opposite, negative ions, enhance them. The list of positive effects of negative ions on human health could fill a book.

Is it any wonder that vacation homes, retirement communities and wellness spas strategically

station themselves near large bodies of water?

Florida's "snowbirds" aren't there just for the oranges. Coastal converts and natives all have the same thing in common. Longevity, healthier retirements and one could say, "a second wind."

When we look out into the ocean, we're reminded how powerful and amazing it is. It's mind boggling to think how many billions of gallons are contained in those seas. The fact that so many life forms inhabit all the seas gives one pause. From the tiniest plankton to the largest whale, all depend on each other for their very survival. Have you ever wondered what would happen if the moon ceased it's holding power over those seas? It certainly gives a person a whole new respect for the oceans that grace our planet. And it's no wonder that life on earth would cease without them.

So if you have pondered the possibilities of living out the best part of your life on the coast, your decision could affect the rest of your life in the most positive way. You'd most likely be extending your life, and you'll be happier and healthier to boot. And that my friend, would be the greatest gift you'll ever give to your loved ones.

  • Never underestimate that next walk on the beach
Your body is approximately 62 - 70 percent water. It's no wonder we are drawn to it.
