A Wind Driven Rain Brings in a Terrifying Truth

Drew Bush
Someone was knocking at the door. The question is who knocks at the door at eleven o' clock at night in the pouring, wind-driven rain? Jason got up from the couch and walked to the front door. He peaked out the front window to see who it was. It was a little boy! What was a little kid doing out at this hour? He could not believe how irresponsible some parents really were.

Jason opened the door and saw the little boy standing in the pouring rain. "Are you OK?" Jason asked. "Where are your parents?"

"My mommy got hurt really bad," the little boy said.

"Come in, get out of the rain," Jason said. The little boy ran inside.

"Let me get you some towels and some dry clothes, alright? I don't want you to catch pneumonia." Jason went to the linen closet in the hallway and grabbed at least five towels. He wrapped a towel around the drenched child.

"Can you help my mommy?" the little boy asked. "She said that you could help me."

"Your mommy said I could help you? I don't think I know who your mommy is. What is your name little guy?"

"Jeff."

"And how old are you Jeff?"

Jeff held up four fingers. Oh my gosh, Jason thought. He was only four years old? He could not believe a four year old kid was out at this time of night and in the pouring rain!

"Jeff, I really need to talk to one of your parents," Jason said.

"My mommy is hurt," Jeff said.

"How did your mommy get hurt, Jeff? Do you know where she is? Can you show me where she is?"

"Bad people took her bye bye. She said daddy could help me."

"Where is your dad Jeff? We can find your dad."

"Mommy said you're my daddy," Jeff said pointing at him with his finger.

What? Did this little boy just say that he was his daddy? "What? She said I am your daddy?"

Jeff nodded his head yes.

"OK, um, you can sit down on the couch if you want Jeff. I am going to use the telephone, OK?" Jason said. There had to be some sort of mistake. Jason picked up the phone and dialed 911.

"Hello, what is your emergency?"

"Hi, my name is Jason Goldfield. I have a little four year old boy sitting in my home right now. He came to my door about ten minutes ago and was standing in the pouring rain. I am not sure where his parents are. He told me that his mommy is hurt and that she told him that I am his dad. I am not sure how to go about this."

"So there was no one with him? Did you notice a car sitting anywhere on the street?" the operator asked.

"No, there was no one with him. I looked up and down the street and saw no car."

"Ok, what is your address sir?"

"My address is 2343 Maddox Avenue," Jason said.

"Alright, we are sending someone right away. They should be there in about ten to fifteen minutes or so."

"Thank you so much," Jason said. Jason hung up the phone and sat on the couch next to Jeff.

"My mommy is hurt really bad." Jeff said. "He started to cry.

Jason began to suspect that something really bad had happened.

"Jeff, what happened to your mommy?" Jason asked.

"Bad people."

"Bad people? Who are the bad people? What did the bad people do to your mommy?"

"They threw her in the water. She went down," Jeff said, pointing his finger to the floor.

Jason was horrified at what he was hearing. Someone threw his mom in the water? Had his mom been murdered?

"Jeff, where is your father?" Jason asked.

Jeff looked at him and pointed at him. Jason paced around the living room. How come the kid kept saying he was his daddy? He had no kids. No one had ever told him he had kids.

Jeff stared into Jeff's eyes. "Jeff, how do you know that I am your dad?"

Jeff pulled something out of his pocket. It appeared to be a photo. "Mommy showed me."

Jason examined the photo closely. His heart began pounding in his chest. It was him. Somehow, this little boy had gotten a picture of him. Maybe there was some sort of truth to this situation.

"Jeff, your mommy gave you this picture?"

Jeff nodded yes.

A loud knock at the door: "Hillsborough Police Department!"

He had no idea how he was going to explain this to the authorities. It really did sound like something horrific had occurred and he had found himself right in the middle of it.

Good one, I'm still working on mine, but someone was knocking at the door at 11 at night in the pouring rain, guess I'll have to rethink that! :)
